Blossom wasn’t cuddly at all…far too independent for that! She did use to like coming to the front bars of her cage tho for a chat

The thing is, if they have been tamed, they actually are quite handleable! Which sounds like a contradiction as it's the taming that can be the difficult process and can be time consuming initially and need concerted effort. There was a Roborovski breeder from the National Hamster Council who used to say (and on her web page), that once they are tame they can be more tame than other species of hamster - that they will just sit with you and not run away. It's just the taming that's the difficult bit and maybe takes experience as we are scared of hurting or scaring them sometimes.

I had just started getting somewhere with our first robo Nugget - albeit I started the taming a bit late - when during the process, found he had some small lumps unfortunately. And so he wasn't with us much longer.

Here it is - it looks like Doric Hamstery now has a blog rather than a web page. The information is slightly different but still says Robos can be handleable and how to get there . I don't think I've read anything that says you shouldn't handle them (as the author comments about) - but there is quite a bit of misinformation in various parts of the internet - but I think it's true that many people don't out of fear of scaring, hurting or dropping them and that they developed a reputation for being "watch" pets. I remember Doric Hamstery was always a strong proponent of taming roborovskis and it inspired me to try and do so with ours!

I think most people would agree that hand taming a Robo can be more difficult than taming other hamsters. Once they’re out of the cage and in a playpen or other secure area, it can be easier to start hand taming them. But sometimes that is the first hurdle - getting them out of the cage...

Are you trying to encourage me to get another Robo . I would love one but unfortunately the timing isn't right at the moment - and I'm focusing on Higgins who is getting older I do hope that little Robo finds a good home though.

I saw a photograph of a Melanistic yellow Syrian hamster recently, and I am wondering if Blossom could have been part melanistic yellow The hamster had the same colour face markings. In the Us they are called yellow-black. There's a photo of a melanistic yellow syrian at the bottom of this page if you scroll down. What do you think?

She did have a gorgeous coat, those homemade toys were great too. The long paper towel rolls are clever!

Why not get both?

One is enough for me, just the right amount of interaction & attention each day.
