Hello
Like the title says i just want to know if this new substrate i bought is safe or not? I put it into his cage in a little tub and he ate a tiny bit of it which was a bit weird but I guess he will take it out of his cheeks later. I took it out of his cage and now I'm just wondering if it's safe or not. It's made from marinetime pine and sphagnum moss.

Thanks

It seems to be bark and moss. I wouldn't use it as the main substrate in a cag. It's designed to create humidity for reptiles, If it gets damp it could create mould or too much humidity. I'm not really sure that moss is that great for a digging box even - it's usually the bark people use as an alternative digging substrate. Moss is sometimes used on top of something or to fill gaps in bendy bridges. Again you want to make sure it's dry.

For the main substrate you'd need something like hardwood bedding or paper bedding - or kaytee clean and cosy - or a mix of those. As it might not be great for digging, you could maybe just have a small area on top of the substrate for a variety of texture. Eg a little square-ish area with some there. If he pees on it though it'll get damp and need changing out.

Thanks for the response.
As long as it's safe for him that's okay. It's just in a tray in his cage so that he can play around in it. Mostly so he can have other textures. Just wasn't sure if pine was a safe wood.

To be honest I think I will take it out because it does seem a bit sharp and I don't want him cutting himself.

I was just going to say that looks ok :-) But if you think it's a bit sharp then maybe that's a good idea. Some people use coco soil or cork bark pieces in digging boxes :-) I edited my earlier reply slightly.
