Jack

Jack was sitting on his shelf this morning and looked at me expectantly.
I gave him a little porridge, he cleared his bowl and went to bed.

Clive's sniffing nose appeared from his house as well, soon as he heard me.

Aww, it is so clever the way Jack communicated to you like that.

I'm curious to see what Jack is going to be like tonight. He has been very active lately. I've noticed that in Rory who was quite a lazy and sleepy hamster when younger and then became very active as he grew older.

I was at work last night and Jack must have been in a strop. He had chucked his rainbow bridge off the house, jammed his wheel, almost turned a stone over and dug around the substrate.

He's around 16 mths now but could be older. He was a large hamster when i got him off the small ads and looked bigger than the 3 mths i was told he was.

My OH fed him last night but he doesn't let the hamsters out because he finds it hard to get them back into their cages.

Betsy was the only one he let out when i wasn't there but Betsy and my OH had a special bond and she would always come back to him.

I think even the quieter ones gain confidence as they get older :-) Looking forward to seeing Jack. It definitely sounds like he was trying to get some attention!

Jack's out and about.
I only turned the ceiling light on briefly to take a photo and he wasn't impressed.

What a beautiful little face Jack has. It is lovely he is enjoying his evening stroll.

The storage bin with plastic toys inside has become a favourite place to explore. I rearrange it every few days

Hello Jack! He does look a bit surprised there. He is very handsome :)

What a lovely ham he is 😍
Great idea to have the box there for them, looks like fun!

Not sure what's up with Jack. He chucked furniture about again last night. In fact, he did it after i had gone to bed because he wanted out again. My OH told me.

Jack had two one hour freeroaming sessions last night so he's had plenty. No matter how long he's out, he wants more. He even bar chewed to get my attention.

This is so out of character. I can't see anything physically wrong with him but will check his teeth tonight and he sleeps all day. He moved out of his house ages ago and built a nest under the shelf next to his wheel. No idea why. I checked his house and he can get in it but blocks the door with substrate.

Jack used to be so placid and patient. He's also more active when out and runs around and climbs more.

I wonder if he's miffed because Lilly moved in who is a daytime hamster and she's new so I talk to her a lot using her name.

Clive was jealous at first but he's fine now. In fact, Clive is the calmer and more patient now.
Maybe Jack is jealous and expresses it differently.
It's like a role reversal between Jack and Clive but why?

I'm not saying that i want the old Jack back but i want him to be happy. It bothers me when a hamster is not happy for whatever reason so i try and find out to see if there's anything i can do to help and make them happy again.
I don't think a bigger cage would make any difference.
That's Scottie kicking things about now to get my attention. He wants his morning treats. I'd better go.

Maybe Jack is jealous. You were able to reassure Clive so I am sure you will be able to do the same with Jack. I totally understand how you feel in saying you want to make them all happy and will try your best to do that. I am the same. If Jack wants to come out late then you must be so tired waiting up with him.

Aww, I see Scottie has you wrapped round his little paw. :)

I wouldn’t worry about him moving out of the house, some of them do just seem to prefer making a nest somewhere else.
It does sound as though he might be taking some time to adjust to Lily being there, how long since she moved there (sorry I’m really not up to speed with all the hams yet).
It is difficult when you’re not sure what might be bothering them, maybe it will just take time for him to settle.

Jack gets up around 19.30/20.00 and Clive earlier than that.
By the time i go to bed Jack would have had about two hours of freeroaming.
He used to be happy with one or two freeroaming sessions but now he's not and wants out again. When he doesn't get what he wants he throws a tantrum!
His temperament has changed and i haven't been able to figure out the reason behind it.

Rory went through something similar but more extreme. I figured out the cause, did something about it and he eventually calmed down again, took weeks though.

The reason for Rory's emotional dilemma was caused by my ignorance. I had taken in a rescue female Syrian, the beautiful Dolores and let her freeroam. Her squeaks of delight weren't squeaks of happiness, they were mating calls! Rory was a handsome male Syrian in his prime who was driven insane by the scent of a woman.

This household has been all male aside from myself for a long time until i took in Lilly recently. Lilly is a female dwarf so i wouldn't expect a male Syrian to react to her romantically.

I sat with Clive by Lilly's cage so he could see, sense and sniff her which seems to have reassured him. I'll do the same with Jack as soon as the opportunity presents itself.

I wonder if Lilly smells odd to Jack as he is not used to her. I am sure you reassuring him like you did with Clive will help.

Poor you. It does not look like you will be getting much sleep for a while!

I think you’re right in that he’s unlikely to be reacting to the fact there’s a female around being a different species so he may just be sensitive to the change in his environment & having a newer ham near by, jit can take time to figure out what they need but I’m sure you’ll get there & get him settled again.

Doesn't affect my sleep because i don't stay up half the night to let Jack run around.

Freeroaming time happens as per normal. Jack gets more out of cage time anyway since there's mostly only two of them in the evening who want out.
He managed with less when Rory and Rodney were alive.
