Aw, so sweet. Your son looks so happy and is gently offering Cookie a treat. :)

Cookie is a very cute little boy!

When i got my first hamster i bought exactly the same cage from petsathome, an identical flying saucer, wood shavings and believed everything the pet shop told me.

Then i watched my hamster grow and outgrow one wheel after another. I thought that this can't be right what the petshop told me and joined a hamster forum where i learned about what a Syrian hamster really needs.

Petsathome does sell a suitable cage, the 100cmx50cm Savic Plaza but it needs to be ordered online. I wished they'd keep it on their shelves so people can see it. It would also be nice if petshops stocked some 11in wheels on their shelves.

I'm glad that you have found this forum. Cookie is still little and you had advice on how to improve his current cage. The rest will fall into place.

Maybe you could explain to your son that Cookie is a scared little baby who needs to grow up a little before he is brave enough to meet his new family.
It may help to set up a night vision camera so your son can watch Cookie movies in the morning until Cookie is a bit older and more settled. He may feel less disappointed and more involved with his new pet.

Thank you for reply hamster cam is a cute idea , I’m going to make his cage more cosy thanks for all the advice ☺️

Progress already! That's lovely Cookie took some treats from your son. The only thing I'd be careful of, with the bars off, is he may seem all quiet and cute now but sometimes they can just jump out and run and hide somewhere! So maybe if the cage is in an area where he can't get very far, that would be ok, but the danger is places hamsters can get stuck. Eg where pipes go down through floorboards. Not sure which room your cage is in, but if you can construct a kind of hamsterproof area or playpen area maybe and have the cage inside that, it would be safer having the bars off (and may be some taming time as well).
