meet Nora

Hello. Can you tell us a bit about Nora? :-) What are her favourite treats? Is she your first hamster or have you had others?

Nora is my first hamster. I did tons of research before adopting her, mostly by watching YouTube videos, using ChatGPT, and exploring this lovely forum while looking for safe foods.

Nora is currently in a plastic bin cage. In my country, it's hard to find hamster cages that are big enough. Most pet shops only sell small ones. That’s why I’m building a 4 x 2 ft cage for her, which is now in its final stages. Another challenge is finding a proper hamster wheel. The biggest one I could find here is just 6 inches. Correct me if I’m wrong, but that’s not suitable for a Syrian hamster. So, I’m making a 30 cm wheel myself.

It’s been less than a week since I brought Nora home, so I’m still learning about her behavior. She already responds to my voice, which is adorable!

She’s not picky about food so far and loves hiding it in her hideouts. She loves her sand bath.

I’m looking forward to learning more about how to care for hamsters and giving Nora the best life possible!

Nora is a very lucky hamster to have such a good owner ❤️
Yes, you are right about hamster wheels. Syrians need about 12 inches to run comfortably on. Some female Syrians hamsters chew wood so there is a relative risk of escape from wooden cages under certain circumstances. A 4 x 2 ft cage is wonderful, lovely and spacious and the size, along with deep bedding and enrichment should help to make her content and reduce the risk of chewing. Looking forward to seeing more Nora piccies and learning about her new cage and wheel. I'm sure they will be wonderful ❤️

That's amazing you're making her a wheel :-) What type are you going for? A bucket wheel? There are various tutorials on here and on youtube, about how to make a hamster wheel - you've probably seen some. I think you could do a really helpful post for others, about how you made it :-).

I'll link the threads about diy hamster wheels in case they help :-)

Congrats on your new little friend. Hi Nora, what a sweet little face.

Welcome to the forum, look forward to hearing how she settles in 😊
