Hi and welcome to the forum, Mochi is so cute. 😊

I’m sure he’ll love his new Getzoo multi chamber and will then no doubt sleep in it and start storing his food here 😀
Thank you!! I hope so. I can’t wait to put it in his cage, it should be arriving in a few days.

Is the wheel possibly scraping against the side of the cage? I can hear a noise every time he stops running. It might be that he can't get enough momentum because the wheel is scraping against something.
Yes it’s possible. I think the 33cm was just too big for the cage, so I’ve swapped it for a 20cm smaller wheel which he seems to absolutely love and it’s high up enough that the bedding doesn’t get in the way. I’ll upgrade to a bigger wheel as he gets bigger.

Hello and welcome :) I can see you've had lots of great advice above. I agree with Elusive that it would be better to replace the digging box with a large house. I don't think a multiroom house would fit that well in an Alaska - they fit better in 100cm cages. So for now a shoebox house would be ideal. Basically something that's dark inside and has plenty of room to build a really large nest and fit a corner litter tray inside.

If you have a shoebox, you just cut the base out so it's open underneath, and keep the lid as a lift off roof - so you never need to remove the house or disturb the nest. And cut a hole for a door - the best place for the door is on one of the long sides - ideally at one end of the long side, so it's darker at the other end - they tend to build a nest in the darkest place. So the end opposite the door is an ideal place to put a corner litter tray with sand inside. Syrians will virtually always use an ensuite toilet! And then it helps keep the cage clean and dry and you just need to lift the roof off to empty the toilet every few days. It means you don't need to do regular clean outs and can just spot clean as and when needed (which avoids stress for the hamster).

If you have a bendy stick bridge, then putting that over the door works well as it makes it even darker inside and also provides a tunnel entrance (which tempts them in) and a ramp onto the roof. You can put the odd thing on the roof as well - eg a food dish.

At 12 weeks he is not technically a baby but still a bit of a toddler or young child!

I think once he has a good house, his normal habits will kick in - eg nesting, burrowing down in his house, hoarding and burying his hoards in the house. Then he might stop hoarding in the wheel!

I also wonder if the 33cm trixie wheel is a bit large for him to push. The 28cm one is fine for most Syrians, so if you could get one of those, you could keep the 33cm one for a playpen or out of cage wheel until he's fully grown. They can keep growing up to about 9 months old but have done most of the growing by 6 months old.

If he's stuffing bedding near the wheel as well you'll need to keep checking it's clear daily. But again once he has the house he will probably stop doing that as he won't be nesting under the wheel any more. They usually move straight into a house overnight, if it's large and dark inside. But it can help to have a trail of sunflower seeds leading to it and inside, and a smelly treat inside to tempt them to go in and check it out. Eg cucumber.

Actually this house is quite good. I'm using it at the moment for a baby Syrian. It's not a full sized multiroom house but it still works well - and might be easier than a shoebox house. But you would need to get the legs/stilts with it to support it underneath. Maybe 15cm legs if you have 6" of substrate in that area. Or you can get 10cm legs if you want the house partly under the substrate or if there is not quite 6" in that area.

I have it with just the one inner divider at the front in front of the door, a larger compartment behind that with the toilet in and the left hand side just open without a divider (where he sleeps). It's a good house and will fit in the Alaska.

The stilts are in 15cm, 12cm and 10cm. The 12cm ones might be about right for just under 6" of substrate at the house end, but the more substrate you have in - the better.

So sorry, I completely missed this comment. Thanks for all your great advice! I did end up getting him the 3 room multichamber house as I measured it and it fits perfectly in the corner. I haven’t tried it out yet, but I’ll let you know how it goes. I also got him the 20cm Trixie wheel for now as I was so worried he hadn’t used the wheel for 4 days and I wanted him to feel happy on something much lighter as he’s still little, and he really loves it. I’ll upgrade to a 27cm as he gets bigger. I definitely feel like he acts like a toddler sometimes :p

The Getzoo corner house was a success and Mochi starting using it straight away which left his wheel clear so he’s been using his new 27cm wheel with no problems. Thanks everyone for your great advice!

…and here’s a little video my daughter made of his on his playpen 🐹

He looks very busy and happy, the music suits him too, great video!

Aw, what a lovely update! Mochi looks to be settling in very well. 😊

That’s great to hear, he does look happy & busy.

Hi everyone, could do with some ideas on how to organise Mochi’s new cage. We’ve got the MeewoFun enclosure which I’m sure she’s going to love, but I’m but sure how best to organise it. I’ve put some beech chips in the corner and then I’ll put her multichamber house in the left hand corner. I’ll need to make space for her dig box, wheel and I’ve got a platform where I’ll put her water bottle. I’ll post a photo of her current cage and new one. Would love some help in organising. Thanks!

Are you in the US? I see it has the front opening door :-) From what I could see the one with the front door is only available in the US.

I can see you've got lots of beddding in there and is that the multiroom house front left? Wheel on platform - maybe put at the back, as you have now - whether that's in the middle or over to one side is up to you and how other things will fit in.

Personally I'd leave the dig box out (you could keep it for out of cage time) as she now has lots of bedding to burrow in and you could put other things in instead that she'd enjoy. The large tunnel and the hide would be great in there. Maybe you could get a cork log as well?

I’m in the UK. I also read that it wasn’t available but I managed to get it on Amazon. That’s a good idea to put the wheel on the platform. I was wondering about whether to keep the dig box - I could put the eco soil in a container or jar for her to use instead. When I move her multichamber house, would it be a good idea to keep the old bedding in and food stash? I don’t want her to get too stressed about all the changes.

Wow - I clearly didn't look hard enough if you found it on Amazon uk :-) I'll need to adjust the info on the cage list then.

Yes keep all her old bedding and spread it on top of the new and press it down. So it all smells familiar. I'd also transfer her nest and hoard across and put it in the house (or most of her hoard). And also don't clean any items before moving them. It's tempting to clean the wheel etc but better if you don't. It'll be fine for a couple of weeks while she settles in :)

Amazing, thank you!! She’s a very clean girl and wees in her sand box so I’m happy her things are all relatively clean :)

By the way, it think it was you who suggested the chill n chew mat - that was a big success as it’s the only thing she’ll chew that isn’t the bars 🤪

I still can't find it - do you have a link.

For the extra digging substrate you could use a bowl on a platform yes, but as you have the digging box already I guess that could be good to use for different substrates as a digging box. Maybe if it was sat on the floor of the cage. Would it be tall enough for that?

Yes it is tall enough. She doesn’t tend to go in it that much, but she prefers the tray of soil at the bottom so I think a bowl would be better.

Sure, here’s the link: https://amzn.eu/d/7ox1zIs

Thank you. That's the link I saw but on the description further down it says "no front door".
