Hello!
I'm here to start the diary of Moka, our Syrian hamster.
We believe she was born in October 2025 (we don't know exactly as she was a “gift” and was later put up for responsible adoption).

She lives in a 120 cm Bucatstate habitat and has a 32 cm wheel of the same brand, two different substrates, which are paper and moss.
She eats a mixture of Getzoo Syrian hamster food and Bunny Expert Traum as her ‘basic diet’.

She likes to run in her wheel and... anywhere she can. She also LOVES eating EVERYTHING. She doesn't seem to enjoy being touched very much and has a strong personality and is a bit crazy, to be honest.

She arrived home on 22 November. We went to pick her up almost 300 km from home, as her foster home was about 500 km away. Since then, she has always been very curious about us. At first, she didn't come out much, but when we saw her, she would climb onto our hands and take food.

Later, we tried to establish a routine by waking her up at around 11 pm, and she would come out and we would catch her with a ‘mug taxi’. However, lately she has been waking up around midnight. We are concerned that when we are not on holiday, it will be too late to spend time with her. Lately, there have been days when she has ‘asked’ to leave her habitat and climbed onto our hands herself, which made us very happy!

When she comes out, ‘playtime’ with her basically consists of letting her run around because she loves to investigate everything and doesn't pay much attention to the ‘games’ we prepare for her. So, for this reason, we would like to establish earlier routines.

PS: By the way, how much food should she eat? We keep the teaspoons that came with the Rodipet food and we give her 1 every night (she obviously saves food) and, of course, every day we give her some vegetables, fruit or protein (egg, boiled chicken, dried worms or kefir).

Lovely to hear about Moka :-) Your image hasn't appeared for some reason - maybe try re-adding it? It needs the "attach files" link below (although I think you know that anyway).

Can't remember how much the rodipet spoons hold but it's a tablespoon a day for a Syrian :-) It sounds like a nice mix of Getzoo and Bunny Dream, but I think both are a little low on protein, and they need 18% to 20% protein in the first year, so I would supplement the mixes with fresh food protein extras - eg freeze dried chicken bites, chopped hard boiled egg or scrambled egg - walnuts are very popular! Two to three times a week. Although walnuts you can't really give too many - they only eat a bit when they want to. But get very excited about them (half shelled walnut that is).

So sweet, like Socks who loves his playpen pen time and late hours ❤️

Oh, I’ll reattach the image again. Both mix have dried worms but they don’t have many proteins as if they alive. That’s why we give her boiled chicken, kefir and eggs. Two days ago they had walnuts but we are aware that walnuts should be just 1 per month more or less 🥰

This is our lovely Moka, photo from yesterday night: she was very still on the sofa next to the TV controller and it looked like she was choosing what to watch 😂

It's a gorgeous photo - she is so sweet, and seems happy to be stroked :-) I don't think walnuts need to be limited to once a month for Syrians - maybe for dwarf hamsters :-). I give one or two a week sometimes. They often don't even eat it but put it somewhere special! ie hoard it. Or have the odd nibble now and then. Anyway she's having lots of nice protein extras there.

Moka update!!

Sorry for not posting for so long... To be honest, when I logged in, I saw some photos of Moka that I posted three months ago, and she looks so much bigger now! You can see for yourselves!!

This hamster started out shy, but now she’s getting more and more confident about venturing out on her own (without using the ‘mug taxi’), and to be honest, she now feels much more comfortable with our hands and climbs all over us... A few days ago (although we’d already been warned), we saw her scratching around her gland area, and her genital area was red from scratching too; she also had a strong smell. As Maia had had parasites the previous month, we got really scared... So we took her to the vet (it turns out she’s just in heat and her hormones are all over the place, which is normal), but even when we woke her up during the day she didn’t get angry and let us pick her up as normally as possible, despite us disturbing her during the day.

We’re so happy! She weighs 101 grams (she is around 5 months), which we also thought was a bit low and worried us, but the vet insists that every animal has its own build and she doesn’t look thin either :)

In the picture she's ready to climb to our hands and get out of the cage (it was hard to choose only 1 pic!)

She's gorgeous! 100g is small for a Syrian, especially female. So she must just be a small Syrian. Main thing is they get plenty of protein in the first year, so they can build muscle. What mix is she on?

She's having the Bunny dream mixed with Getzoo. Twice a week, she has two portions of protein, each about the size of her ear: we alternate depending on the day, but we mainly give her plain boiled chicken (sometimes mashed with other vegetables), boiled eggs and, every now and then, kefir. She LOVES all food – it’s brilliant!

I've been getting the Mixerama Syrian Gourmet food recently. My syrians seem to love it. The protein level is quite good in it and no lentils. I think it's about 16.5%. I sometimes mix that with Bunny Dream.

But she's still young isn't she? Perhaps she hasn’t finished growing (and putting on weight) yet; she’s never lost weight, she’s always putting on weight, although it’s true that her weight gain has slowed down a bit now. By the way I weekly check for Rodipet website and it's still closed!!! :(

I know it's such a shame it's closed. Yes she is still young so needs 18% to 22% protein. The Mixerama and Bunny dream still needs the protein supplementing. Mine used to like a bit of scrambled egg sometimes :-)

Twice per week is fine right? each portion about the size of her ear?

The size of her ear is for size of veg :-) With protein - they probably eat a similar amount. When I put scrambled egg out on a teaspoon it's maybe about just under a level teaspoon and they eat all of it. Sometimes half and then come back for the other half. With meat like chicken then yes just give a tiny amount or they might pouch it. The egg and most other fresh food they seem to eat straight away. Or in two sittings!

I hadn't heard of this mix and just looked it up! I think I'll give it a try with our next hamster.

The Mixerama mix is from Germany but now also sold in the uk by Hope's Healthy treats. The problem with buying it direct from Mixerama in Germany is the cost of the shipping! The food wasn't that expensive, but with shipping it was about 38 euros every time! So I'm very glad it's now available in the Uk (tip from @Yorkie)

Both links are the same mix
