I think hamsters who have built up a sizeable hoard in the wild probably live on it for a few days. Why come out and risk getting eaten if you can stay in bed and sleep? Syrians can build up a bit of fat reserve as they are larger than dwarf hamsters and probably have a slightly slower metabolism. But I think there is also an element of sociableness in hamsters, even male Syrians For my sins, I slept beside Socks and his barred cage every night for his entire life 🫩
But an acrylic cage might be easier on the sleep. At 3am, he was desperate for out of cage time I think free roaming over the whole room gets them a bit hooked on coming out, if you have a safe, really hamster proofed room. But Maz has the most experience with hamsters of all characters I hope Nibbles can be tempted

He’s actually only behaved like this since he’s been in the playpen, maybe too much excitement? The first time he was so eager, he jumped straight into my hand as soon as i put him back. I think he would enjoy free roaming but until his behaviour is normal again I won’t try that. He’s never come up during the day though. I can’t get him out later than 10 pm as I have to work so early
My bathroom is 100 percent safe for roaming maybe an option later. Unfortunately he pees poops and stores his food all in the same place I have to clean it out every now and again. That might annoy him, but the alternative is having a mouldy stinky bed, that’s not an option. Oh dear, I just hope it improves I have the feeling he’s not very happy. Could it be due to
hormons?

I love them and have bought beautiful fresh ones… he had the one which he squashed in his wheel and since then he has no interest. Neither eggs scrambled or pouched, nor porridge or cucumber. He’s very fussy

I had one that was very picky. Looked horrified if I put out a blueberry or strawberry and gave me black looks. He did love apple or banana though. Maybe try a small piece of apple? If you find something he really likes that smells nice, that should tempt him in.

He loved apple and broccoli and carrots, but the only thing I can bribe him with is yogurts drops wild berry flavour. But only if he’s not in a mood then nothing works

I do believe it’s the issue somehow….. his behaviour reminds me of my ex boyfriend

I left him in peace yesterday and will do so today. The heat here could also be an issue. I have managed to keep the temperature down to 24 degrees, today and my mums it was 28,4 degrees but the short heatwave is over tomorrow. He has not come up for his veggies this evening. I will check on him later when he comes up. But other than that, I can’t do much more.

Heat definitely does affect them and make them a bit lethargic.

He’s finally woken up and snatched his broccoli he’s sitting in his porch and having a wash. I am so relieved, it’s not like him to miss his veggies at 8 pm. Usually he waits for me to deliver them to take in storage. He then gets up at 10 pm. He seems fine and I have opened all windows and it’s cooled down to 22 degrees. Now I can go to bed in peace. Night night everyone

He took a nut in his wheel and got scared, I was just putting some fresh water in, he leaped into my arms and landed on the cushion under the cage (I always have it there) he had the time of his life, I am late for bed. But he enjoyed it so much. He zoomed around the kitchen and inspected everything. Got him back in his taxi. He was furios that I didn’t let him out again though.

I will be do tired tomorrow finally he settled down in his wheel. He kept shaking and biting the door to come out again. I couldn’t believe it! He hated the playpen but loved the kitchen! He had cobwebs on this head
