Netherlands to ban dwarf hamsters from 2024

I think it may be more about people not meeting the dwarf hamsters needs but if they are mainly in inadequate cages then I cannot imagine other hamsters have good care.

I'm sorry but this makes me fume they should meet Pete he is the perfect pet he enjoys cuddles never ever has even threatened to bite he licks my fingers and then washes his face he is such a happy little soul dwarfies make excellent pets if they live with good caring people I'm assuming they presume if guidelines are not followed to the letter it's taramount to neglect. Sorry for rant but feeling insenced that dwarfs deemed as not suitable pets.

Especially as Syrians and Chinese are apparently considered ok as pets

Apparently they’ve decided dwarfs are aggressive and bite and breed too quickly. But surely that could be true of all rodents…
Load of tosh they only breed if they put male and female together as for biting well so do all rodents if mis handled or mistreated they should not single out the dwarfies

Jain - maybe you should write to Agriculture minister Henk Slaghouwer and tell him this!
Thank you I will look him up if he is the one responsible obviously alter my tone if I do get in touch but he really does need a more rounded view overall although seeing as im in the uk not the Netherlands and no longer in the eu it probably won't make any difference except I hate the injustice/prejudice of it so will feel better for giving him alternative thoughts

This makes no sense, what a dumb move. If anything you would think they'd be concerned for Syrians just because they need so much space. But allowing them and banning dwarfs?

Stupid.
That was my thought. If they would ban any species then I would have also thought Syrians.

It does seem significant that they are only banning the species that are sometimes kept together in pairs and groups and where the breeding creates hybrids - which are not something that would be found in the wild. If they gave sounder and more full reasoning, it would help. Although that doesn't give much explanation if it includes Robos as well - apart from the multiple breeding issues that can occur when people are missold a pair. There have been cases of people overrun with Robos, who are difficult to sex before reaching mating age, with litter after litter every 3 weeks, from sibling litters.

As mentioned earlier though, that isn't a reason to ban a species from being a pet, but there are probably plenty of stories of inexperienced owners keeping a robo in a tiny cage, because it's small and the hamster being scared by people chasing them around trying to handle them.

What they need is legislation on cage size and welfare and good care guides.

Very true. Having guides for people would do far more then simply banning dwarf hamsters all together. I am also wondering what happens if somebody is keeping them illegally. There will be people who continue to breed them despite the new law.

That's a good point Rainbow. Unless there is a big enough legal deterrant like arrest if found to be breeding or keeping them.

I always thought that was a bit weird when people in parts of the US would say they couldn’t have a Chinese because it’s regarded as a pest when other hamsters are allowed.

I know - I suppose it's a fairly new species to the US. I think they used to have a similar ban on Russian dwarfs, but that was lifted some time ago. But only certain states.

I know for sure California has one on Chinese hams, and they also allow Syrians at the same time as well. They were supposedly worried about escapes leading to hamsters breeding in the wild. Their rationale was the desert areas are similar enough to their natural habitat they would become an invasive species. Which hasn't happened, and I'm not even sure what plant life they want protected anyways. I used to live in the southwest, there's not much to protect.
