New baby Syrian

I stayed up quite late last night. He quite cleverly nipped out to get his veg without me seeing and then no sign of him. But clearly I out-waited him and he couldn't wait to get back on his wheel, so as I was about to go to bed, I saw him on his wheel. And went over slowly to talk to him. Expecting him to run away as soon as I moved towards him. He didn't - he just froze, standing in the wheel and looking at me. I chatted to him a bit and he ignored me ha ha. I chatted a bit more and then he slowly walked off the wheel, went partly down the side of it and did an ostrich (ie stuck his head out of sight). Quite funny as I could still see his back end but he maybe thought I couldn't see him if he did an Ostrich so he couldn't see me.

I can remember my family dog doing this lol 😆

He is the complete opposite to Raffy so far! Raffy was so friendly and unafraid of people - only afraid of hands. But then Raffy was a few months old when he came to me. I still think this one is more of a calm plodder but I'm sure he'll gain in confidence.

We're not quite there with a name yet!

He's a cute little chap, a baby still but managing the challenges of starting out on his own extremely well. He's getting his food sorted out and is putting the items in his cage to good use. I'm sure he will shyly nose his way out while you are nearby soon.

It's nice to have two hamsters with different personalities. Leo and Toby have completely opposite personalities and it makes a nice contrast.

Slowly :-) But then it was his first night.

Congratulations Maz! This is wonderful news and he’s such a cutie, love his colour too. Great videos, looks like he’s carefully starting to check everything out, he’s a lucky Ham 😊, look forward to hearing all about him.

Thank you so much Zara! Yes I am glad I am not constantly trawling the small ads and rescues all the time now! It's been going on for months. It's a new chapter as well :)

Last night's nightcam video was very similar to the night before. He stays up quite late really - till about 8.30 to 9am! He came out around 9pm but then didn't appear again until the middle of the night. I think I need a noisy wheel so I can tell when he comes out earlier as I can't see his cage from where I'm sitting - only if I get up to go and look. He was trying to drink from the water bottle and kept pawing at the bottle itself but eventually sat in his food bowl and drank from it at a very strange angle, leaning over :) So I know he can use it ok but the placement could do to be better so I'll look at that.

The sweetie! Perhaps sitting in his food bowl is comforting ❤️ He must be delighted not to have to worry about brothers anymore.

I realised why he sat in his food bowl and twisted round to the water bottle - it's a corner shelf and where the bottle is, next to the food bowl, is not quite enough space for him to both sit on the shelf and have a drink! So I've moved the food bowl onto his house roof and moved the bottle further along the shelf where there is plenty of space to sit. I hope it doesn't freak him out that something has moved! Tonight will be his fourth night here and he's had three days more or less left alone so see how things go over the next week.

Congrats Maz! He really is a gorgeous boy, love his distinct character & seeing how he’s slowly getting to explore everything & make himself at home.
Look forward to seeing more of him.
