New omlet hamster cage

I wonder if you can see them anywhere - a shop eg.

I noticed it's for sale in Europe and the US. It could be a good option for US owners as it's actually bigger than a 40 gallon breeder tank, in square inches/cms. A 40 gallon breeder tank is about 4180 square centimetres. Depending on the measurements of the top part. If the 88cm wide includes the sticky out bits of the side clips then it might only be an 80cm cage. Although a good depth.

Actually the base doesn't seem to slope a lot so it might only be approx 80cm x 50cm :( I know sometimes maximum measurements include clips and handles on some cages. Really want to see one though!

I doubt they would send me one to review in case it wasn't a positive review, so as it says "free returns" I've sent for one to review. The price was £142.50 with the 20% discount because they added a postage cost on. I suspect the Aura Plexi 120 would be no more than that (if only it was available!).

As has been the case for many years, there is never the "ideal" cage! The Aura 120 could do to be slightly lower. I do love it though.

I will admit that Omlet have exceeded my expectations! I was expecting their new cage to be almost as bad as the first one, but this one isn't too bad at all. It could be a little bigger, but the depth is great, there's a big front door, and I like the stand. The playpen is nice too.

It is rather expensive for the size though.

It is expensive! If full price. Mine is being delivered on 10th. I'll review it then :-)

It's intended for gerbils too, but gerbils are kept in pairs or more, so need enough space to avoid conflict.

I don't know what the recommended cage size is for gerbils - presumably also about 100cm - but I think they need something taller usually don't they @Daisy?

It depends who you ask really but something about 80-100cm+ in length. It looks like the Omlet has space for about 8-10 inches of bedding, which is okay, although the barred section would ideally be taller for gerbils so that a 10-11 inch wheel doesn't get in the way of the deep bedding. So the new Omlet isn't ideal for gerbils but not too bad. I notice that although it's listed in the hamster and gerbil section, it is described as a hamster cage and they don't actually mention using it for gerbils, which makes me wonder if they're planning to bring out another gerbil cage?

Actually, I just noticed in the FAQ section they do say it can be used for gerbils but it's definitely marketed more towards hamsters.

They seem very keen on sending friendly emails and building the excitement emails. I've had three emails since ordering. The first one confirming the order. The second one is more personalised and says from "Person's Name at Omlet and entitled "Big lives for the little guys". The email itself is very picture heavy and says "Hamster Happiness is here" and a bit of advertising for the cage.

Today I received a third one "Let the excitement build" - with a video/picture of assembling the cage and then a link to how to build it.

The marketing seems very geared towards families with children and the word "big". However it's quite helpful to get information in advance of a cage arriving, on how to build it.

This is the how to build it video (it's on youtube as well as via their link) It's still hard to tell the size but the perspex section does look bigger than 80 x 50 on the video. While they are not showing 8" of bedding, they are at least showing people to fill the base with bedding (about 6" presumably) and it would easily hold 8". I quite like the cheap cardboard multichamber hide!

The 26" wheel can be bought separately for £29 and as it attaches to bars and is silent, it could be a good option for a dwarf hamster wheel - although not that cheap. But cheaper than niteangel wheels.

Filling up the perspex section would allow the family to see their hamster in his burrow (at time at least) which is the charm of hamsters.
