Orko is an 8 month old robo whom I adopted from the adoption centre at a pet shop when he was 4 months old. His previous family had to surrender him as they were moving overseas. Orko is my first hamster so I am still learning. He is a very sweet and happy boy and so shy. I have 2 cameras in his cage to ensure I monitor all that he gets up to. Every morning I watch his night time antics so I have my very own nature documentary.

Last night I spotted him doing something new. He loves to climb his hides and here he is managing to get between two.

He is great :-) Looking forward to seeing more of his videos! Robos are such funny little things. As you know, ours decided to try and escape recently! Unless he just accidentally missed his footing rather than jumped out!

I remember that. I actually told my partner and he gasped as he know how tiny they are and how hard Orko would be to catch.

I was pretty worried myself! Thankfully they are usually a bit surprised themselves to find themselves in a strange location and will usually walk into a tube if you put it near where they are (especially if it has cucumber in it). I've had to do that before with a Syrian. Although that was a more scary experience with our first Syrian - he got behind the fridge! I didn't dare pull the fridge out in case it squashed him and we ended up having to dismantle the kitchen work top to get in sideways to the fridge without moving it. After all that he then just sauntered out the opposite side into the room lol! And sat there waiting to be picked up.

That reminds me of the time one of my guinea pigs managed to get between the gap between my oven and the wall and while the oven was on! I was so scared as I could not pick the oven up. Luckily she was fine and came out when she felt like it. They do like to scare us!

They do don't they :-) And I think they sense our mood and can be contrary!

Now that Orko has settled in I notice how much he loves flax sprays. He really enjoys them. I would say they are his favourite spray. Here is a nice close up of him foraging for flax.

Lovely close up video of Orko. So cute when he blinks. He's loving the flax.

I used to plonk a bunch of this flax in the middle of a dwarf's cage. I think i used a toilet roll tube as a stand.

This type of flax seems to be a favourite with hamsters and they harvest them.

I find that other types they often ignore and they have more of a decorative purpose.

I bet the dwarfs loved that. I think you are right about the other kinds being more for decoration. Orko only likes flax and millet.

Orko has always appeared to like storms. The noise does not scare him and he will happily potter about and run on his wheel. Last night we had a storm and he got up earlier then usual no doubt because of the storm. I hear of dogs who are scared of storms but little Orko enjoys them.

When I first adopted Orko he would only use his wheel and nothing else. Four months on he will now do lots of other things. I believe he only used his wheel as he was not used to having on that was the correct size for him and it was so exciting for him to be able to run as he wanted to.

This is a clip from last night. I put out his seed mix earlier on so he had plenty to find.

How strange that storms don't bother him! He must feel very secure in his lovely cage. They do get used to noises I think.

He seems to actually enjoy them and be more active during them. It is strange but very cute. My friend calls him a little storm chaser. :)

Ha ha - little storm chaser - he's seeing them off maybe.

Orko, i'm with you on that one. I also love storms and will rush out of the house to get a better view of the lightning, just like you rushing around to take it all in. Maybe you can feel the exciting tension in the air too.

And Orko, just between you and me. Some humans are scared of storms but humans can be a bit weird.

Yes maybe he can feel the change in pressure and it naturally makes him more active. Hopefully this will help if you have any fireworks nearby too.

I really hope so. I live close to a big park who have firework nights.

None of our hamsters reacted to fireworks last year but they are used to my OH watching disaster movies 🙄

Orko did not get up until 3AM. Just when I think he has a pattern he will change it. He is so tiny that he tripped over the little cube of chicken I left out for him. How cute.

Ha ha. I can't believe he didn't smell it before he tripped over it! He must have been moving fast.
