I was at work overnight. My OH just told me that both the big ones meaning Otto and Clive were sitting on their shelves glaring at him with disgusted expressions on their faces as if to say 'what are you doing here'.

Aw poor OH. He is their porridge chef and that is the gratitude he gets!

I'm well aware that Otto looks a bit like a skinny version of Jack but that was not the reason i got him, not consciously anyway.

For practical reasons, i.e. fading eyesight of a pair of oldies, i had been looking for a cream or white male Syrian hamster, ideally short haired and not a baby or youngster.

This afternoon i sat on the floor while Lilly was out again and browsed through the freeads. Otto's ad caught my eye because he was a hamster in a Hamster Heaven going for free. Hamster Heavens sell for around £25/30 so there's always a risk of a hamster falling into unscrupulous hands and possibly ending up as snake food.

Someone was trying to rehome him on behalf of a friend who didn't have the time to give him the care and love he deserved. The family was genuine and really wanted a good home for him.

Otto lived in a Hamster Heaven without a wheel but had a big blue hamster ball. He had toys but they were either dangerous or too small. He had Carefresh bedding but was fed on nuggets. They tried and cared but didn't know about hamsters.

His original name sounded similar to Otto so i called him after one of my late uncles.

Otto is around a year old and tame. He's currently exploring the hall playground.

Bless him I love a happy ending 😍

Otto weighs 182g now. He has put on 24g since he's been here which is great.

That's fantastic news, shows how lacking his diet must've been before coming into your care.

Love the glaring for the porridge chef 🤣

Ha ha I also love the glaring at the porridge chef. Hopefully the porridge appeased them a bit. That is great news that Otto has gained weight.

I added a small top cage to Otto's neighbour Toby's HH. Otto got nosy and had to check it out before coming out. He climbed onto a hide that's on the shelf to get the closest sniff possible!

They do like to know what's going on near the cage :) Both Pip and Raffy are very curious if anything appears next to the cages.

Cute little Otto, being curious as to what's going on. 😊 Guess they can all smell or sense the other hamsters around and hear you saying other names. I wonder sometimes what Hams would make of a new arrival near his home.

Otto's eye problem has flared up again. Not as bad as before yet but it isn't right.
He doesn't appear to be in pain and hamsters about as per normal but his vision is affected.
He also has what could be scarring or a skin tag on his back. It hasn't grown and moves within the skin.
I can't help thinking that Otto has been attacked by something like a cat when he lived with whoever had him and didn't care for him. I don't know of course.
I'm going to take him to see Clive's vet and will make an appointment tomorrow.
I expect she'll have to examine his eye under aneasthetic to see what's going on and decide on how to proceed.

Oh the poor little guy it's such a worry when they need a vet hope it's a simple cure and he dosent get too stressed

Otto has already had one course of antibiotics a month ago and i had hoped that it would have cured it but sadly not.
Luckily he doesn't get too stressed by a vet visit and i have very good vets near me.

Sorry to hear that. These infections can come back. Poor Otto. I hope the vet can sort something.

Sorry to hear this Beryl, eye infections do seem to have a habit of recurring in some hams, really hope the vet visit goes well & they can help him out.

Otto's eye looks fine this morning. Maybe it was just a sticky eye last night. I'll wait and see what its like tonight before phoning the vet.
My OH called Clive for his porridge and Otto came out looking for his. A dè ja vu Jack moment.
