Pantry moths...

Wasn't sure where to put this but thought pantry moth, so here goes.... I freeze all of Hams food and treats which then go into sealed storage containers ready for using. I've just brought a pack of meal worms as my daughter is super keen to see if he would like one and they've been talked about a fair bit on the forum as a good protein source, do I freeze these also before opening? I'm going to store them separately from his other little treats. Thks

To be honest I don't know! I probably would. It depends if they are freeze dried mealworms or not maybe.

I actually do not know either. Like you, I freeze everything but I have not ever frozen mealworms. I can see them through the packet so perhaps that is why.

I saw a post on a Hedgehog thread where they freeze mealworms but those seem to be live ones! Assume yours aren't the live ones :) . In which case does it say dried or freeze dried on the packet? A pack can still get moth eggs on it even if the mealworms have been freeze dried before.

Here you are. Apparently they can be frozen. See under "What's the best way to store them" under Q&A on this page. And that's for dried mealworms.

I am glad you said this. I have an unopened packet and will put it straight into the freezer.

Super, thank you Maz and RainbowBrite, they are just the dried version of mealworms. I’m going to pop them in the freezer 👍. I couldn’t resist offering one tonight when he was out in his playpen and he didn’t look impressed 😂 he was more like ‘what is that and why is it here’. Made me chuckle.

Ughhhhh, how horrid. They are in the freezer as I type. Don’t want any random bugs appearing. Thanks 🙂
