I will introduce Rodney soon but have to keep an eye on him just now.

Aw his little face in the first picture! He looked so puzzled. I see he is happy now his shop has opened.

Rodney certainly knows where the goodies are stashed!

Rodney's history:

While at work a small ad of a Syrian hamster in a Savic Spelos caught my eye. Turned out that i had met the seller before and he told me that this is a nasty hamster who bit his young child and attacked his partner. He's going to be returned to the shop for a refund.
I told him to wait and i'll be there shortly. My mind was made up to get this hamster.

What i found was a terrified baby hamster. A goofy looking little thing who looked like a mouse with a tiny grey face and huge ears.

We named him Rodney because he reminded us of the Only Fools and Horses character.

Rodney learnt to trust me. It took over six weeks and a very gentle and slow approach but he got there. During this time i got very attached to this odd looking little creature and knew that i could never part with him.

Rodney started to grow into a very funny, confident and sociable hamster. He discovered free roaming and a passion for climbing giving me many frights when he looked down at me from the top of the clothes rail.

Oh good grief - near heart failure time…

Rodney has always been a very lively character with a zest for life. He's an intelligent hamster and a very good communicator. He talks to me.

He chirps when he has something to complain about, usually when his dinner is late and he makes sure that i'm there and listening.

He's an old man now at nearly 2yrs 4mths and has slowed down. Rodney developed some health issues and for a while i was very worried about him but medication helped.

I had to make some adjustments and moved him in a lower cage which he seems very happy with.

He wasn't happy with the playground only though. No, he wanted the kitchen and lounge as well so i spent an afternoon on my hands and knees checking every inch for hamster health & safety. De cobwebbed, moved furniture and mopped and cleaned everywhere and everything.

In the evening i let Rodney out and he walked straight to the one and only pot plant within his reach, climbed into the pot and started to chew the plant! Thank you Rodney for kindly pointing out the one hazard i had overlooked in my risk assessment.

I am so pleased you got him! He does sound quite maverick! But quite adorable too. Of course he was a frightened baby. I can relate to it taking time for them to trust you and be tamed after a start like that.

I just came downstairs because i could smell the veg in the steamer. I said to my OH that Rodney will appear soon because he'll want some of the veg.
His sniffing nose was already at his door so i gave him some or i woudn't get peace to eat my dinner.

Aw he came out for the smell of veggies. Looks like he's enjoying tucking in :)

Oh that is so cute! He knew he was going to be able to share your vegetables with you. :)

If i wouldn't have given him any before i started to eat mine, he would have sat by his bowl chirping.

I wish I could hear that sound. I imagine it to sound like a bird. :)

So cute he can smell the veggies and would come out to ask for some. I think that’s really lovely.

One of ours actually climbed on my plate on my knee and tried to nab my dinner (he was out on the sofa!) Another one used to try and eat food out of my mouth if I was munching something! He'd be literally trying to get to my mouth!

It's like a squeak and sneeze combined. It worried me the first few times i heard it because i thought he had an uri. He made himself very clear with his behaviour and body language though. He turns the volume up and down depending on how annoyed he is.
