Thanks Maz. She is so into everything. Such a busy little thing. I am hoping that translates to being inquisitive with us once she gets a bit bigger.

So Saffie we are hearing dig in the evenings but not seeing out and about much. She definitely likes her burrowing. The trouble is I have absolutely no idea where she is pooping/weeing. There have been some wees in the sand bath but not lots. I've got no idea where she is sleeping. I'd assumed in one of the chambers of the Happy Henry house. But I've just taken the lid off and I can't find her. I've had a little dig down and there is no sign of a stash, or wet bedding. She often seems to come out from the house though.

What do I do? How do I clean when I have no idea where she is actually living? Short of destroying the entire enclosure I'm not sure how to actually find her!

Well I stayed up till midnight last night and saw Saffie for approximately 3 seconds. She was clearly digging as we could hear her on and off from about 9pm. Not quite sure how to tame an underground hamster. Considering renaming her Moley...

How long has it been now? Does feeding time tempt her out? (Depending what time you do it). The smell of cucumber can help there

It's been a week. She comes out to get food but we'll after we have gone to bed. Initially she was out earlier but she seems to be relishing the opportunity to tunnel and not much else.

I'm not sure you can smell cucumber from beneath 8 inches of bedding

Indeed you can! Or hamsters can. It always surprised me. Unless it's that the associated the cage clanging noises of feeding with fresh veg maybe. But hamsters do have a very strong sense of smell.

Shes just come out and taken some coconut and a bit of walnut from my fingers. She also gave my hand a good sniff. Given how big her teeth are that was slightly scary

Aw Syrians don't usually bite unless a) they are very scared and you're lunging at them b) have had a traumatic history with hands and been badly treated c) you poke your finger in their nest when they're asleep . They may try and test or nibble a finger if they think it's food or if they don't feel safe (eg being held up in the air for some time while carrying them, which is not recommended) they may give a gentle nibble to let you know they're not happy with it. Just communication. They really are quite sweet gentle creatures.

Our previous hamster did the "is this food" on my daughter's finger. I am quite sure there was no malice!

Shes all quiet again. Headed back into her burrow. Wherever that may be...

All interesting things and a bit of twiddling thumbs and waiting to see what next How long is it now? I usually find it's 10 days to 2 weeks before they get more confident in the enclosure.

We have only had here a week. So still early days. Just have to keep offering yummy things!

Little update on Saffie. She's coming on well with tameness. She comes to hands for treats and is ok to be scooped up over the last few days. I've just done a big cage rearrange, while she was out in the playpen, as various things were not working. Her wheel was by the side of the cage and she kept trying to climb up between the wheel stand and the cage wall to the ceiling and I was worried about her falling. We had to take it out last night as she just wouldn't leave it alone. So the wheel is now in the very centre of the cage. In the entire time she has been with us I've never ever seen her on it. However having just put it back she seems delighted and is running away in it. She's also busy running about and checking out the new layout, stuffing bedding in to her mouth and taking it into her house to 'fix' the mess I've made in the grand sort and clean.

She seems a very tidy hammy. I couldn't find any wet bedding. She seems to be using her sand bath to pee. She also is a bit of a hoarder. Put it this way, her stash was at the floor of the cage and I scooped it out with a mug! She has enough food in there to survive the apocalypse! I poured half a mugful back in there so I'm hoping she wont be too mad.

I get the impression she likes to explore. She seemed bored with the previous layout and seems to be relishing the new set up.

This is Princess Persephone. Goddess of the underworld. She's living up to her Sunday name and digging lots of burrows, but prefers to go by Saffie. She is six weeks old and we've had her a whole four hours. She's filled the hamster shaped hole in my heart.

So this evening Saffie got up around 8pm and started the serious business of digging around under her multi chamber house. Then after a good 15 minutes came out and started on the equally serious business of digging a tunnel under the sand bath platform. I know this because she disappeared under one side and emerged a while later from the other side. She was less than impressed to see me when her nose emerged, and disappeared again straight away. It's clearly very important this tunneling, and not to be interrupted.

Absolutely love it ! Saffie is very sassy !!!
