Good morning everyone 😊
Where can I buy sunflower and pumpkin seeds still in there shells? Albert gets a few in his hamster mix and he loves them. I want to get them to stick on to DIY treat.

I have only seen them online. I know Amazon sell them.

I buy the Mr Johnson ones in the pet shop. Health shops like Holland &Barrett or Grapetree are also places to try.

I bought a bag of pumpkin seeds from Aldi. The green, oval shaped ones. Not sure if they are the ones you are looking for. The Little Ones dwarf hamster food has large, white oval seeds so i wonder if that are the ones in the shell.

The white ones are in the shell Berly, they are better for them as they have to work for the treat & it’s good for their teeth but htey can be hard to get hold of.

I got mine from Mixarama. If you live near an Arabic shop they sell pumpkin seeds in the shell but you have to make sure they are not salted. I have never seen whole seeds in any supermarket.

As an aside to this - I only realised pumpkin seeds had shells after getting a pumpkin :) I was surprised the seeds were white rather than green. However that pumpkin yielded a lot of seeds . I dried them. Then lightly toasted some after reading about doing that. Our hamster loved them whether toasted or not. I only lightly toasted them to dry them quicker originally.

But when it gets to Halloween ……… plenty of pumpkin seeds!

Mixerama sell courgette, cucumber & I think squash seeds, I’ve had the first two which the hams liked & I see no reason why they shouldn’t all be safe.

You can often find sunflower seeds in the shell in the world foods aisle of supermarkets, near the Polish foods. Sometimes they are salted though so check first. I think I've also seen them in African or Asian supermarkets if you happen to have any of those near you (I live in London so have several and they have a very interesting array of seeds and nuts).

All squash seeds are safe to feed just like pumpkin seeds. They are essentially the same plant.

Thank you 😊

Where can I find a list of safe seeds and nuts for hamsters?

I did have some really good lists on German sites bookmarked but not sure where they are now, I can have a hunt.
I think the only nuts you can’t give are bitter almonds but the almonds sold for humans are fine, off hand can’t think of any others that are off limits.
The list of seeds is pretty long so if no one has a list to hand just ask about anything you’re unsure of.
