Syrian hamster cage gnawing and not using wheel

Strangely my Syrian has started bar biting above his shelf a tiny bit, since he has been free roaming. If he sees I am still there and he decides he wants to come out again. If I turn the light out he stops and goes and runs on his wheel. (Maybe he is just telling me to turn the light out and go to bed ha ha).

I think sometimes bar biting is part of communication. "Let me out now!" or here it's "why is he out and i'm not?"
I stick cardboard tubes or pieces through the bars.

As long as it's not a persistent, teeth breaking or nose chafing thing, i don't worry too much about it.

I never had a habitual bar chewer but would attach acrylic panels to prevent injury if i had a hamster like that.
