Just that really. What is the scariest thing your hamster has ever done? :-) Whether it scared you or scared them! I'm sure we've all had the odd moment.

The one for me is probably the slug. Which some people may remember. Raffy used to free roam the living room every night. One night I saw him doing something near the door and he looked very excited. When I went over to look, there was a large slug on the carpet and Raffy looked like he was about to eat it and still very excited. I had an eeek urgh moment and sort of moved Raffy away. Once he was at a bit of a distance for it I thought - have to go to the kitchen and get some kitchen paper to pick it up.

I nipped through and did that but by the time I came back, Raffy was onto the slug and trying to eat it. I was trying to stop him and move him away and he then just pouched the whole thing! Aargh! So I was up very late that night with him and had a few attempts to get him to depouch it - without success. By then it was probably about 3am and I gave up and just put him back in his cage and thought - I'll have to try and find this slug tomorrow. He'd already eaten part of it so I was quite worried.

Had a good look through his cage and bedding and house in the morning and no slug remnants. So I phoned the vets and said - he's eaten a slug - does he need to come in (I'm aware dogs can get bloodworms from eating slugs). That was a very reassuring call as the exotic vet said it shouldn't be a problem for a hamster as they have different digestive tracts and she didn't think bloodworms could survive in a hamster digestive tract.

Kept an eye on him daily and for a long time afterwards and he was fine. But it still makes me squeamish just remembering! Raffy clearly really enjoyed it.

Socks was free roaming around my guinea pigs' cage. I assumed it was too high for Socks to climb into. The lights were dimmed, but luckily I saw him, he was sitting on the roof bars like a little ninja, glaring down at them angrily. Luckily I managed to pick him up before he could get through the bars and fall into the cage. I think the guinea pigs might have hurt him, or he them, so I'm relieved they never met 😮

I remember the slug 🐌🤢🤮🤣

When I first had Blossom I tried handling her out of the cage. She got on the carpet and scuttled away and made a beeline for the gap under the bookcase. Fortunately, I managed to scoop her up. I’m not sure I’d have seen her again! She was a speedy little thing!

Our worst thing was losing Penny around the house. I had been on a night shift so Robos r us was left home babysitting. Unfortunately the cage door got left open and by the time I got home from work,Penny had been out of her cage for 13 hours. I noticed the door about half hour after I got home,so it led to a frantic search around the house. We searched every nook and cranny, and eventually I picked up the waste paper basket in the living room. Thankfully I realised it felt a little heavier than just paper . I frantically searched through and found her curled up and sleeping. She woke a second later and screamed a scream I never want to hear again. My poor little baby was so scared,I but her back in her enclosure and left her to calm for a few hours. That evening all was forgiven, she came out for snuggles ,and thakfully she never wanted to explore again.

That sounds very stressful and scary! So she was asleep in a waste basket? I'm so glad you found her. I suppose she felt more exposed out of her cage, when found and more fearful of predators perhaps. I've had a few escapes before but not worrying ones - more that they were out in the room and I couldn't find them. It did take me two days to find Tino once - I knew he was in the room and it was hamsterproof but he was hidden away. Had a bucket trap and his cage on the floor the second night. He actually escaped from the bucket trap! I had it all on nightcam, and was asleep in his cage next morning.

But yes had a couple of scary moments realising a cage door had been left open. For quite a long time with Pip our robo at the time. Called him and no sign of him in the cage. I started removing things from the cage to try and find him and he suddenly popped up. So even though the door had been open for hours he was still in there!

Similar with Raffy our previous Syrian. The door got left open all night once! And he was still in the cage next morning! But he was quite a cautious type.

I have been very belt and braces with cage doors since then!

Oh and Pickle (another previous Syrian) was out all night once as well - but similar to Tino I knew he was in the hamsterproofed room, just couldn't find him. That was entirely my fault, poor Pickle. He had been having out of cage time on the sofa, and, being quite tired that night I just had a blip. Went to the kitchen to sort a few things for a moment, then went straight to bed and forgot Pickle was still on the sofa!

Remembered when I woke up next morning and of course he was nowhere to be found. Had his cage on the floor that night and he went back to his cage as well.

But those weren't scary escapes like Penny's.

Awwww they cause us all heart attacks. Penny's was so scary cus she wasnt in an hamster proof room when she escaped. And being downstairs she could've gotten outside,it was a blessing that she fell into the bin,and slept in the tissue. But we have always said ,and still say now, even though she has gone,"what if I hadn't noticed the bin" and she ended up out in the rubbish? She would only come out for free roam with us then,I don't think she ever forgot.

Oh my goodness, what a story! Probably a wonderful day for Raffys perspective 😂

Oh yes, Winnie gave us a fright alright!

She escaped from her cage a couple of weeks into living with us. We were so so worried until we eventually found her hiding in the kitchen a few hours after we discovered the escape hole. I put her in her carry cage while I fixed the hole. I've never seen her stuff her face so enthusiastically!

We worked out she must've been on the loose for 12+ hours. So we were so relieved when she was back in the safety of her reinforced home.

That doesn't bear thinking about does it?! I am sure you would have noticed when you emptied the bin though :) They do have memories as well IMO. Speaking of memories, Raffy used to keep going back to that same spot - maybe looking for another slug
