So.. as I mentioned yesterday I was going to be collecting a syrian hamster today.

Meet Twinkle! Name still to be decided but she certainly suits Twinkle 😅 She's about 3 months old and very cute.

She seems reasonably chill so far, she had a gentle nip as I got her out the carrier but nothing terrible considering she's in a new place and was woken up for me to bring her home. Apparently the 2 others she came with were very chilled out as well. I had originally hoped to stick with males but.. I couldn't walk away from that face 🤣 the first picture is from when I saw her yesterday, she reminded me of Puss in Boots begging to be taken home lol

Aw - she chose you! And I can certainly see how you couldn't resist that little face :-) I think first taking home is often "no contact" - ie transfer via a tube - so perhaps not unusual you got a nip as you say! But it would just be fear I'm sure. I remember Tino squawking at me incessantly when he first came home! I really like the name Twinkle actually and think it suits her, if you decide to keep it.

Yes that was my plan until I realised the tube I had was far too small 😂 she's going to be a big girl I think! Never mind, she can chew it up instead, I've ordered larger ones! I thought I had a unused one left from the guinea pigs but I must have used it and forgotten. I'll probably use a mug or little jug in future to get her out, might be a bit more stable feeling.

I think I scared our first hamster when I went to take him out of the pet carrier - he opened his mouth and screamed as he saw my hand descending! I felt terrible! Not easy getting hamsters out of pet carriers and the angle for trying to get a tube in anyway (and then they don't want to walk into it!). At least she didn't scream!

She has an adorable face - the expression somehow and a lovely colour and markings :-) That first photo - I can see why you wanted to take her home! Third photo - she looks really happy :)

She is a gorgeous colour - like a very rich brown and bits of golden :-) And a lovely furry tummy!

As soon as I saw her all I could think of was this

🤣🤣 I'm hoping the others find a home quickly otherwise I might have to bring another home, they were lovely chunky little things. I hadn't quite realised how much I had missed having Syrians, it must be 8 years since my last one, Edgar, passed, and we only had him 10 months, he wasn't a very healthy boy at all bless him.

I know what you mean 😊. I love Syrians - they have their own special quirks abd can make you laugh. So sorry about Edgar - that must have been hard. He was lucky to have your care in that short time and a loving home.

Do you know how old Twinkle is?

Miss Twinkle is settling well, stupidly I didn't realise until I got her home the wheel was obviously too small as it was Pashas old one 🤣 she's definitely too big for a dwarf wheel, even though it was better than the small spinner she had. I went out first thing today to get her a 30cm wheel..she even looks pretty big in that!! Hopefully when I get her cage issue sorted out (she's in a temporary one atm as the big one I ordered arrived with a corner smashed in 🙄) I can see what options I can find for an even bigger wheel as she grows, Lavender can inherit this 30cm one as the one she has gone through Orsa and Saffron and it's not stood the test of time tbh!

Anyway, she's looking very cute, took a treat from me earlier and is nice and calm and curious about her new home. I'm looking forward to her getting to properly explore a nice big cage, multi chamber hide and her sand bath! Which didn't fit in this temporary one sadly, but hopefully it'll be sorted by next week.

Ooh she's gorgeous - she looks very happy :-) What a pain that the cage arrived smashed! She does look quite large! I usually find a 30cm wheel is big enough for any syrian - I've used the 30cm silent runner for them before and it's plenty big enough :) Raffy did have a 32cm rodipet wheel (only because it was the only size I could get at the time) and it was enormous! They still run well in that size but it takes up quite a lot of room.

I was gutted, I was so looking forward to setting it up, now I've got to step over bags of bedding to get into my room 😂 nevermind. She doesn't seem to mind, luckily! It's certainly bigger than what she was in previously.

I expect I will need to see what size she stops growing, I have found some 36cm wheels designed for pygmy hedgehogs which look suitable so if needs must I can get one of those. If she grows the size of Ivy the cow hamster she's probably going to need it lol! I learned that Ivy the ginormous girl I was also considering, found a new home too so that's really nice.

Oh glad Ivy the enormous one found a home too :-) 36cm is massive! I think 32cm is usually about biggest enough for any hamster :-) Even rats use 30cm wheels. Getzoo do one I think. They're a bit expensive though and need plastikoting (but I think they sell replacement cork tracks). Which cage was it that arrived broken?

Getzoo 33cm wheel

It was a second hand aquarium! Which seem to be hard to come by 😅 the way communication is going I might wait until after the Christmas madness and get a Bucatstate or similar.
I just want something the delivery drivers can't damage at this point 🤦‍♀️ this isn't the first time. I could go out and get her a barred one tomorrow but I don't think I could deal with bar chewing. She seems like the type who would bless her.

Good point. That is such a shame. The Bucatstate’s are quite expensive - I wonder if there will be sales after Christmas.
