He is, I’m ready for anything really but very happy to see him more back to his old self for now.

Happy moments and precious times with Zak. Even more hugs being sent 😍

Think he might enjoy some gentle brushing if he's having a hard time grooming? I've never heard of a 4 year old ham, wonder if he's close to a record? That's great he's still active

His coat’s in good condition really & just a bit spiky so he doesn’t need any help with that ilguy,.
He does have trouble washing himself if he’s on a hard surface like the carpet or in his big bowl as he tends to fall over so I just cup my hand around him & he leans into me for support which is quite touching.
There aren’t many authenticated records of hamster age, the oldest here in the UK Guinness book of records is four & a half so he’s not far off.
He is gradually slowing down a bit more each day now but still eating well & enjoying his crocks.

Helping Zak by cupping your hand around him so he leans into you for support is so sweet 🐹💕

That's good to hear! I'm so happy for you guys, what a treasure to have had him for so long.

Zak is a veritable rubber ball!
We’ve had a few really down days when he didn’t seem well or happy at all except for the odd few minutes together here & thee & then today he’s bounced right back again.
It’s such a roller coaster ride having a ham this age with this much spirit, love him to bits ❤️

Atta boy Zak! ❤ perhaps it’s warmer today with you as well as here.

He really amazing that he keeps bouncing back like that. Maybe when he's having less good days he's conserving energy by resting.

I hadn’t realised how long it’s been since I updated Zak’s thread, nearly a month & a month really is a long time at his age.
He’s steadily showing his age more & more now, sleeping more & only coming out two or three times a day most days, he did have 3 days a couple of weeks ago when he didn’t want to come out at all & yet again I was preparing myself but he bounced back again!
He’s very slow & wobbly now but he can still give a crock a good go & tries his best to climb out of the door when he wants one, needs a bit of a helping hand but he gets there.
He continues to confound me, he has a ridiculously good appetite for an old hamster, quite the little hobbit now, not quite 7 meals a day but not far off, mostly chicken, tofu & baby food but he still enjoys some of his crushed up nuts & seeds.
He’s gone from being very frail & skinny looking to being quite chunky again, he did go down to 36g at one point which is quite low but he’s now worked his way back up to 48g.
He does need a helping hand quite a lot, he tends to fall over when he’s out eating his crocks or having a wash but is quite happy to nestle into my hand to keep steady, he struggles chasing his food around his dish too sometimes so I spend a lot of time just sitting with his holding it at just the right angle to get that last little bit that’s escaping him!

Sometimes it does make me sad to see how fast he’s aging now but his spirit is still strong & our bond just grows stronger, can’t want for more than that ❤️

So very pleased to hear news of Zak. I was thinking of him when I posted that recent robin photo as I hijacked his thread about the robin a while back I think.

He is an amazing old gentleman. Putting on weight, 25% up is a lot at his age. Slow and wobbly he may be but he is still making a determined effort to enjoy his food. That is the best sign and his bond with you, so heart warming ❤️❤️

Thank you so much for the update. I was also thinking of Zak who is the most amazing hamster i've ever heard of. There's something almost eternal about him.

Thank you Coco & Beryl, he is amazing & I know what you mean Beryl, it’s like the never ending story!
Living with a four year old hamster has to be a once in a lifetime experience so i’m trying to make the most of it.

Thank you for the update on Zak. He enjoys life with you and being old and doddery doesn't mean the spirit isn't young :) The fact he's put weight on is a good sign it's all really just old age and he enjoys life. Long may it continue.

I too have been thinking of Zak and I am happy to have an update. :) Zak really is amazing. He has such a zest for life and he has the most wonderful care and bond with you. How precious you help him so he can eat his beloved crock treats. It is fantastic he has gained weight too.

Lovely update on Zak. You and Zak have a true and beautiful friendship 💕
