仓鼠 Tsang Shu

It depends on the species partly. Chinese hamsters tend to live a bit longer than Syrians - maybe three years. And Elusive had one that lived to over four years. On the other hand, the average is maybe two years.

Tsang Shu has exited her tunnel. She is still. Her eyes are closed. She appears to be panting.

What is happening?

Hi Robert - I'm sorry to hear this. It sounds like she is unwell and you'll need to see a vet. She might have a respiratory infection. The other thing to consider is the room temperature. Is it cold where you are? In winter, Hamsters can go into Torpor if they get too cold. The main way to prevent that is to keep the room temperature above 18 degrees celsius regularly.

I'll wait to hear what you say about temperature before we think about what else it might be.
How old is she now?

Temperature in her room is 72°F / 22.22° C 倉鼠 is about 2 years old

She looks like she is unconscious
Still panting

I think you need to get her a vet appointment. It is possible she is dying but it could also be that she has a respiratory infection that can be treated.

I have her crated and will race her to the vet tomorrow

Amando Memoriam

Tsang Shu has gone to Hamster Heaven.
She went quickly in her sleep. I think it was old age. That was a blessing. Such a rapid and precipitous decline is still traumatic. Thank you for your help and great hamster fellowship.

I am so sorry Robert. I did wonder if she was dying. She had a good life with you. As you say it's a blessing her decline was sudden and not protracted. It sounds like it was her time.

I know it's a shock and quite sudden but when you've had chance to adjust, don't let this put you off getting another hamster :-) Nothing will replace the one we loved but a different species of hamster can help and they all have their own personalities. I find it helps with the grief when a new baby hamster makes you laugh with their antics.

I'm so sorry to hear this. She did have an adventurous time, lots of different foods to try and lots of fun activities.
I'll miss the cute night vision pictures.
Play well, beautiful Tsang Shu

Very sad. She was lovely, enjoying her nice home and delicious food and always looking so pretty. Sleep softly little Tsang Shu ❤️

So sorry to hear of the sudden loss of beautiful Tsang Shu, you had such a great bond together and she’s had a wonderful life. Beautiful memories for you to cherish. 🌈
