Baking (Bread)

Already had mine quite a while before the pandemic :-) But it was extremely handy during the pandemic! It's like a surreal nightmare now, remembering we couldn't get food or supermarket orders. We ended up having deliveries from a local farm shop which cost a fortune. Ready meals and veg etc.
It's so strange isn't it, feels like a lifetime ago

It does and yet life still doesn't feel quite the same as before I think. And sometimes best not to remember the worst bits.

Bread going in, using fresh yeast! 🤞

We learned to make it with fresh yeast at school :-) I didn't know you could still get it. I remember it turns to liquid when mexed/beaten with sugar :)

Oh, I mean freshly bought yeast, it's dried but in its own sachet. But young enough to make quite a difference. They came out holding hands 😄

I'm pleased with them, easy to eat, taste good and the crust isn't too hard or too thick!

They look great :-) Enjoy! I wonder if you can still buy fresh yeast? It was like a grey block and had a chemical reaction when mixed with sugar, that turned it liquid.

I remember it. My mother used to make ginger beer, and used yeast in a cake. The ginger beer was amazing!

Interesting one of the reviews warns it is easy to kill the yeast! I assume that is if the water is too warm. That was the same with the breadmaker - if the water was too warm the load didn't rise.

I know this thread is a few months old but yes you can get fresh yeast, if you have a bakery near they may sell some (that's where I got mine years ago).

Thanks, yes, I might try using fresh yeast to see if it makes a difference. At the moment, I have a premixed packet which I am going to bake tomorrow 🍞

That sounds special :-) Some freshly baked bread tomorrow.

Love fresh bread, shame I can't have it anymore. Well, I can have gluten free but that's not the same

I still like the smell of it even though I can't eat it :-) It doesn't bother me any more although it used to. I still like seeing other people eating it!

I used some ready mix for Yorkshire puddings yesterday. I added linseed instead of egg and it did turn into a nice pancake style batter. The instructions said put a teaspoon of oil into each muffin tin unit and baked. They came out as little disc shaped, slightly risen puddingettes, but were quite tasty and crunchy underneath. Nothing remotely like your puddings though, Maz 🍮

If you remember I had a few that came out like that too :-) I think it's easier to make a recipe as it's only eggs, flour and milk - it's just getting the right proporttions, whisking it well and leaving it to stand for an hour before cooking that seems to make the difference. And the oven temperature. I didn't know you could get a yorkshire pudding mix - does it have powdered egg in then?

It's quite a small packet. You add the egg and some water, but I added oil to the batter as well as putting it in the muffin tin. It's a 138g packet by Morrison's. I didn't whisk it very much, I must admit 🍮
