Clive just spent ages sniffing this wheel that had been cleaned. He looks like he's trying to figure out where that came from.

That’s super cute Clive, checking it looks all ok before hoping in perhaps. If this was Hams he’d hop in and spray a little wee about to make it al hamstery again 😆

They do like checking things out thoroughly don't they :-) I wonder if he is claiming the wheel or just curious.

He was just sniffing it. That wheel isn't his style. So far only Lilly run on it.
I think its only 8in or something and too small for a Syrian.
I remember when big boy Jack tried to run on a wheel that size and didn't get very far.

There is an easy way to the new nibble stick but a hamster will follow his nose.

Aw he's very resourceful! He looks like he's really enjoying that.

A treat always tastes better when it has been earned the hard way!

Brilliant! Well done Clive, fantastic climbing skills and well worth the effort for a tasty treat.

I've suspected for a while that Clive's kidneys are starting to fail. He drinks and pees more and gets caught out. His wee looks concentrated and he wee'ed on his wheel which is not like him at all.
I tried to order Bayer dipsticks from viovet to test for a uti because he gets so stressed at the vets but they take too long to arrive.
His vet had a cancellation at 09.00 tomorrow so i snapped up this appointment. I know that he's going to get stressed but i have to find out if he needs treatment before things get worse. It it's not a uti then maybe the time has come for him to start on metacam.

I hope it goes well at the vet tomorrow, that Clive doesn’t get overly stressed & you at least will know what’s going on with him, hopefully something treatable.
Viovet does take too long when you need something in a hurry but you can get the sticks quicker on Amazon, I did wonder if you can buy them in a chemist but not sure about that.

I'm not sure if you can do much about their kidneys starting to fail really. It's just a natural progression of old age with hamsters and it's common they drink and pee more when older. But if you suspect a uti as well then it would be worth seeing the vet, and as you say, see about starting him on Metacam. How old is he now?

I want to rule out a uti because that would be treatable.
He's around 19 months now and has health issues.
I thought of ordering from Amazon but have closed my account ages ago and my OH is away.
My instincts regarding the hamsters health is usually not too far off and the wee on his wheel wasn't something i could ignore. There was no blood but it wasn't as it should be. No strong smell though.

Yes best to go with your instincts. I'm sorry he has health issues. I hope the vet can help.

He may be ok with the vet. He's calmed down a lot since he saw her last. I have been considering metacam for a few weeks because now and again he stops and sits very still but then carries on as per normal. I did start to wonder if he is experiencing sudden episodes of pain. Maybe not. It can be so difficult to tell if they are well or not because hamsters will carry on for as long as they can.

A vet visit is a good idea. I know Clive gets stressed at the vets but he always manages to feel reassured by a cuddle from you afterwards. I will be thinking of you both and hoping all goes well at the vets tomorrow.

Hopefully it will just be a matter of him being on metacam to keep him well.

Sorry to hear this Beryl, hope the visit to the vets is as stress free as possible. Hams and I will be thinking of you both.
