I've just taken Eddie's Hamster Heaven down which confirmed that it was becoming a health hazard. I threw quite a few things out that weren't washable and i came across sticky wee in places i hadn't thought of. As much as i like barred cages, there are a lot of nooks and crannies.

Eddie has been out freeroaming last night and sat in the communal sandpit. I saw him pouch some food in his bin cage just now so he's not too put out by the cage change.

He is in the 64l rub i made up as Lilly's hospital cage which is small. My dilemma now is the decision whether to upgrade him to a bigger tank style cage or not going forward. For now i'm going to leave him to settle because stress can worsen diabetes.

Good to hear Eddie has settled ok for now in the bin cage. It is small but you’ve still managed to make him a nice set up in there.
I think you’re right to leave him for now & give him a chance to get used to the change & see how he goes.
Maybe if you do move him to something bigger if you think he needs it cleaning might be a bit less stressful for him as you have to do so much of it in a larger bin or tank you wouldn’t be disturbing quite so much of the total area as in the smaller one.
 
I am so sorry to hear this. You have a lot of experience with Percy and you have clearly put so much thought into setting up something more suitable for little Eddie. I can see why a tank style set up would be more practical for Eddie. Hopefully he will be much happier in the bin cage.
 
I've swapped sand jar and coconut over so he can see us. It was late last night and my brain couldn't see the obvious.
 
I'm sorry to hear Eddie has been bar chewing. I wonder if he is having some discomfort due to the diabetes? It could be mental health issues, as you say, or maybe something is physically bothering him. Do you think it's worth seeing if he could have some metacam? The issue there is it's sugary. Maybe there is another pain relief med a vet can use with a diabetic hamster? I'm aware there is one alternative.

Glad he has settled a bit in the bin.

I hope Eddie gets a bit better soon, he's in good hands. Thanks for taking such good care of these lovely hams
 
I don't think Eddie is in pain. There's no indication of that and he is eating well.

He is much calmer now and more himself again. Last night i chatted to him to see if he wanted out but he disappeared into the little hut Lilly used to sleep in when she had the loft.

I place his bin cage on the futon so he can climb out if he wants to and then i scoop him up to put him on the floor.

Eddie sits in his sand jar a lot same as he did in the HH or the green ceramic hide.
He sleeps in the carrot house or the little hut. I've seen him on the wheel for a few seconds but he doesn't seem to use it these days. If he takes up wheeling again i'll get him an open plastic wheel like a MouseBro or Bucatstate as they are easier to wipe than the Silent Runner. At the moment he seems to manage fine in the small bin and sadly, with his condition he is not going to improve. I would get him a bigger suitable home should he become stressed due to lack of space. I doubt it though.
 
It does sound as though Eddie is more settled now. He looks really cute perched on his bin there.
 
Aw, he is so cute climbing there. Sounds like he is feeling happier in his bin cage. :)
 
Glad he has some familiar things to enjoy and calmed down a bit.
 
I'm definitely no expert but do hamsters get dementia my last dog Lucy did at 18 years old so wondered if Eddie had a bit of dementia with insisting on constantly bar chewing also now he is getting on in years and not in good health the smaller space of his bin cage may be more comforting to him just the thoughts going through my head I don't really know rightly or wrong
 
That's an interesting question. I've never heard of a hamster getting dementia. They can have neurological issues (eg if they have a brain tumour). The answer is no they don't - they have various chemical protections and this article says that as a result they have been used in studies regarding human Alzheimers.

That's a very interesting article so still wondering why Eddie was compulsively bar biting🤔 if only our animals could tell us

That still looks like 5 star accommodation well done with what you had to work with

I still think that it is the diabetes that is causing damage to his body including his brain that's leading to behavioural or mental health issues.
Diabetic humans, especially with type 1 can display aggressive and irrational behaviours when their insulin levels drop too low.
 
Diabetes could cause issues, like tumours of the brain do. It's not specifically dementia though. More a chemical imbalance.
 
I’m so sorry to hear Eddie has been struggling with bar chewing. He looks so content in the video and photo munching his food and treats. He’s lucky to be with you and that you’ve been able to move him quickly into different surroundings that will hopefully ease any stress he’s feeling. Hope he stays more settled in the bin cage 🙂
