Neptr

I am so happy with age, he is becoming more active. I’ve never had a hamster who became more active with age, maybe apart from my special needs Robovroski.

Neptr is still up each morning rattling around on his wheel, and today was up until 11:45am!

I am also so so happy with his coat at the moment. It’s shiny, healthy and seemingly getting even longer throughout his entire body. When he was little, he was definitely long haired, but in the very typical male skirted way.

He confidently was taking chicken from me, and surprisingly allowed my partner to give him a very supervised petting.

I can’t believe this guy is 2 next month. I’m looking on the bright side that he’s eating more and exercising more now than ever, but the thought of him going is mind melting.

New year new enclosure!

I really left the boys enclosures this time, since we all just moved, I was sure absolutely everything had a new smell. Especially with Neptrs age, I worry about stress a lot more. So it’s been a good while since a cage redo

Neptr has settled in beautifully though. He’s never been more active, and we always catch him in the mornings scurrying about.

I’ve finally been able to add a tank into the enclosure too. I got it off of FB marketplace for £5! It’s quite small but I didn’t want anything too large as I wasn’t sure how much he’d enjoy such a large soil container, nor did I want it to interrupt other necessities of his enclosure.

That looks so beautiful! I am looking forward to seeing what he thinks of his lovely soil digging area. :)

It’s been a couple months since Neptrs last cage do, and safe to say, he absolutely trashed the last one. My other hamster, Cowboy, has barely changed a thing in his enclosure - but Neptr! I can’t believe he’s 2 now!

I have also bought £60 worth of sprays but have yet to receive them, so he won’t just have amaranth, Senegal millet and oat! I hope it really ties the cage together as I hated the look of it right up until the end.

Any feedback greatly appreciated. I know I’ll be needing to make more accessible paths as these days go on, but for now, Neptr seems more spritely than he literally ever has been!

Cheeky boy, trashing his cage :-) I think it looks amazing! How do you find the Rodipet Heureka wheel?

Good enough to waste £40+ on getting two! I find for smaller hamsters, them and other higher/middle end wheels tend to work, but my boys are too chunky and keep moving light wheels. I’ve got it in between two tiles, as even if it’s the heaviest wheel I’ve tried, it’s still not heavy enough not to slip. But yea, I love this wheel. The most silent I’ve had (and with the rescue, it’s been loads!), I love the ergonomic grips, and the stand. It’s also so much easier to clean than others. I’d recommend it all day, really. Just wish the base wasn’t so slippy on wood!

It’s been just about a month since I redid Neptrs cage. And it’s trashed.

I really debated on just redoing the whole thing, but I feel a month isn’t enough without stressing out the typical hamster - though I do think Neptr lovesss when I redo it.

I’ve spent £60 on sprays (and still financially trying to recover…whoever said hamsters were cheap?) so have done a little cage refresh and do enjoy how it’s come out!

And of course, a photo of my double platsa. I love it so much, but my partners already talking about remaking an even bigger one.. not sure how i’ll resist that. I’ve yet to see anyone else do a double platsa, but if anyone sees one, please let me know! Would love to see how it’s been done by someone else.

Neptr is doing SO good. He’s active all morning, from about 4/6 until 11am! He’s CHUNKY too, and i’m so glad considering he’s 2 now. I want that little bit of chunk incase he does ever get sick, I think that’s so important when their older.

I do feel like I’ve been slacking on weighing them both. Does anyone else just get caught up with everything else? They get fed and watered and taken out, but I just never think to weigh anymore. Even though now it’s crucial as he is considered a senior. Just throwing this here to keep myself accountable - weigh the boys!

Ah don’t think it’s letting me post the photos. I’ll try and get round to it!!

You should be able to upload photos by just clicking on "Attach Files" at the bottom of the message box. No need to resize them first, the software does it automatically :-)

Lovely update about Neptr :-) I tend to weigh now and then but not weekly. As long as they're out regularly you can keep a general eye on them and feel them. Raffy is feeling quite bony now but he's nearly two and a half.

I have historically been able to upload photos - think my phone was just bugging out last night!

Here’s the little man today, active in the morning as usual. Can’t believe he’s more active than my younger hamster. Chunkier than ever too!

He's lovely! I have one like that too - an older one that's very active and a younger one who is more of a plodder.

Aw! Thats so cute and also the enclosure look so cool!

Love the cage. I wait a couple of months before completely redoing a cage but I replace sprays and boredom breakers weekly or every other week depending on the hamster.

I've had some hamsters that welcome change, others hate it. My current hamster Ares likes a change of sprays weekly but I dare move anything about!

Weighing hamsters is difficult. Again it depends on the ham. Hamsters which don't mind being handled I weigh weekly- every other week but others, like Ares, hates being handled so I'm lucky if i can weigh him once a month as it causes him so much stress. I didn't mind catching him when he was younger, but now he's ~3 years old, I'm more wary.

I think knowing your hamsters 'normal' and feeling body condition is a better indicator of health than the number on the scale I find. Yes, scales can help show signs of something going on but there's usually other indicators too.

I usually wait a few months but I think sometimes you just know. Neptr LOVES a cage change and I think he does his best to let me know that.

I’m going to be weighing them weekly now. I think we are all our own worst critics but recently I haven’t even felt like an even “ok” owner.

I'm sure you are. I felt bad giving Raffy less attention when I had flu recently. I don't weighing hamsters weekly - just now and then. Unless you notice something like weight loss or loss of condition, and then weekly weighing can be quite important.
