Neptr

Woke up this morning and left my room to put my contacts in. When I came back in, I noticed Neptr just lying in the middle of his cage. He was already stiff.

Neptr was 2 years and 10 months old. He was my first hamster, and I’ve rescued and rehomed many many more since.

He weighed about 150g. Rest in peace little man.

These were his last photos, of his new cage setup & him enjoying it.

Very sad news. He had a very happy life in such a lovely cage with a kind owner. Snuggle softly over the bridge little one 🌈

I'm so sorry to hear about Neptr. That must have been a shock. He was so gorgeous and such a grand age. Play well over the Rainbow Bridge Neptr.

RIP Neptr. Impressive age and a lovely set up. He was a lucky hamster.

Thank you all for your kind words. He didn't really ever slow down, just got more energetic in his older age.

I am going to be selling all of his and Cowboy's things, probably as a bulk sale. My dog has mounting vet bills so no new animals, and it would be wrong to just keep all of this in storage.

Does that mean you won't be keeping hamsters any more then? At the moment anyway. I'm sorry your dog is needing vet treatment.

I really wish I could, but it feels wrong to keep hundreds (honestly, if not well over £1000) of pounds worth of hamster supplies waiting for the day I am financially ready for them again.
I think I need to prioritise getting my living animal back to a good place, and that does mean I need all the money I can get. I've moved back to England so am out of work once again. Just absolutely not the right time to be bringing any more animals home!!

You have the memories and the experience, you are an excellent hamster parent. Equipment can always be replaced in time if you decide to sometimes in the future. Stay on the forum, you are needed ❤️ I hope your pup will be OK. You are a wonderful, responsible pet parent 🐾

Thank you so much! I imagine I'll need some type of hamster outlet, so maybe I'll be even busier here on the forum!
That's excellent! Hang in there. I hope things pan out. I hope your pup is coping too 🐾

I gave all my hamster stuff to charity apart from some cages. I then decided to get a hamster again! I even bought a new cage. Such is life. Hope all goes well with your doggo and glad that you will still be getting your hamster fix here.

I've only ever sold a cage once and regretted it! I still have my first cage (well second actually, the first one went in the bin within 3 weeks as it was awful). First proper cage which was a Savic Mickey 2XL. Only 80 x 50, It was the "minimum" at the time and I fairly quickly decided it wasn't big enough for our giant Syrian. And upgraded him to a 100cm Barney cage. The Mickey 2XL base got broken during a move, but I kept the bars - and then found a Ferplast cage base in grey for only £12! Which fitted perfectly. So it got used for a couple more hamsters.

The Barney was the Syrian cage for the next two Syrians. But with Pickle, who was very shy, it wasn't working with the small doors, and the Savic Plaza was around by then so I bought a Savic Plaza and sold the Barney cage. I thought I could always buy another one if I ever wanted to ........ little did I know Brexit and a pandemic were coming along! No more cages from Germany and no more Barney. Although it is available again now and thankfully there are a lot more 100cm or larger cages to choose from now. But I did regret selling mine!

The Plazas haven't lasted as well as the Savic Mickey 2XL and the Barney. First one went rusty and had to be replaced. Second one had a disaster. My current two I've had for a few years though :-)

Ah just remembered - I did sell one other cage - can't remember what it was called now! That 75mm x 45mm glass tank with the barred top. Got it for my first robo and hated it. It wasn't big enough and the roof was noisy and scared him - so he went in the Mickey 2XL which was slightly bigger and he loved it. It was a Skyline something or other.

I am generally a bit of a hoarder though. And whenever I've got rid of something I've missed it and wished I hadn't ha ha. Same with clothes.

But sometimes you do want a change and hamster enclosures are big to store.

I genuinely do not want to get rid of them. Initially, I contacted a small local pet store to see if they wanted to keep them for a while, but they just didn't respond. It's a shame, but the money could go towards important things now. I do think if I ever come back to hamsterkeeping, I want it bigger and better than ever. Excited to be financially stable enough for that day! :-)

Maybe sell them - I'm sure somebody would appreciate a lovely big enclosure at a second hand price :-)

It's come back to me. The Skyline Kerry Terrarium. Seems like a lifetime ago - the world before the pandemic.

You sometimes have to change direction selling everything right now is probably the best way to go for your present situation. I'm so sorry to hear about Neptra he was gorgeous and I hope your dog will be of comfort to you knowing you can do more for him. Sending hugs

So sorry to hear Neptr has passed away, he was a great age and had a wonderful home with you, leaving lots of lovely photos and memories to treasure. RIP lovely Neptr 🌈🌈

Wishing your dog well with his ongoing treatment, it really is a shame the prices are so high here in the UK. A family friend was in Spain recently and took her dog to the vet with a grass seed in his ear and the cost was less than half of treatment here 🫤
