Hello, I'm very excited the Forum has opened again. I looked in just before it closed and just before we got our hamster.
I wanted to introduce our new Hammy. He belongs to my daughter. His name is officially Mango, although I refer to him as The Hamlet hence the user name. We have had him four weeks and he is 11 weeks old.
Mango likes snacks. He also likes sleeping. As you can see from the photos these two hobbies don't appear to be mutually exclusive. He also quite likes a good run on his wheel. Got to burn off all those snacks.
He is very cute, but still quite unsure of us. My daughter is managing to hand feed him in the morning and evenings and stroke him at the same time, but he jumps quite easily. She is just starting to pick him up for very short periods, of just a few seconds, before putting him back down. He seems ok with this as far as I can tell.
We've learned various things quite quickly. Fingers can be confused for snacks and get eaten. Broccoli must be provided in tiny bits or it gets snatched and buried in the inaccessible den.
The fabulous Happy Henry Homes house has been ditched in favour of having a den in a large cardboard tube buried beneath a platform. Not quite sure what to do about that one! He likes to stash food and sleep in the tube. He also seems to pee down there. Honestly baby boys just have no manners. My daughter has been spot cleaning the cage daily but not quite sure how we tackle the den area as we can't get to it without dismantling/destroying it! Is this just something we have to accept? Mess it all up and then try and put it back together with some of the old bedding and food stash?
Anyway, I hope to share more hammy photos as he gets bigger.
