Hello, I'm very excited the Forum has opened again. I looked in just before it closed and just before we got our hamster.

I wanted to introduce our new Hammy. He belongs to my daughter. His name is officially Mango, although I refer to him as The Hamlet hence the user name. We have had him four weeks and he is 11 weeks old.

Mango likes snacks. He also likes sleeping. As you can see from the photos these two hobbies don't appear to be mutually exclusive. He also quite likes a good run on his wheel. Got to burn off all those snacks.

He is very cute, but still quite unsure of us. My daughter is managing to hand feed him in the morning and evenings and stroke him at the same time, but he jumps quite easily. She is just starting to pick him up for very short periods, of just a few seconds, before putting him back down. He seems ok with this as far as I can tell.

We've learned various things quite quickly. Fingers can be confused for snacks and get eaten. Broccoli must be provided in tiny bits or it gets snatched and buried in the inaccessible den.

The fabulous Happy Henry Homes house has been ditched in favour of having a den in a large cardboard tube buried beneath a platform. Not quite sure what to do about that one! He likes to stash food and sleep in the tube. He also seems to pee down there. Honestly baby boys just have no manners. My daughter has been spot cleaning the cage daily but not quite sure how we tackle the den area as we can't get to it without dismantling/destroying it! Is this just something we have to accept? Mess it all up and then try and put it back together with some of the old bedding and food stash?

Anyway, I hope to share more hammy photos as he gets bigger.

Hello :-) Glad you joined us. Hamlet is adorable - I love that first photo. He has a lovely home :-) Isn't that just typical - they never quite do what you expect :ROFLMAO: I did have one hamster who did the same - ignored the nice house and burrowed under a shelf at the other end of the cage. Most of mine have moved straight into a multiroom house. He did eventually move into the house. I decided to lower the bedding under the shelf because it was getting very messy and hard to get at!

He is probably still quite shy and cautious so has found a good hidey place for himself. If he's peeing in the cardboard tube, then it probably will need removing or replacing at some point so he won't be too happy about that probably! He looks very cosy down there as well :)

Yes baby hamsters do pee in their nesting area sometimes at first until they get into better habits as they get a bit older. They often learn quite quickly when they realise their nest/hoard has had to be invaded if they've pee'd in it!

Have you tried having a trail of treats leading to the house and a nice smelly treat and some food and bedding inside it - to tempt him in?

You've only had him four weeks though, so he's only just settling in really. Personally I would suggest removing the large cardboard tube at that end, a bit of a clean out in that area and maybe slightly less bedding there and tempt him towards the house. Maybe move his hoard and a bit of the bedding/nesting part inside the house as well (so it'll smell of him and be familiar). It may be he decides he wants to stay there though and they can just pile the bedding up again!

Welcome to the forum. Hamlet is a gorgeous fellow. It's great that he is taking food from you and becoming used to bring handled and getting attention 💜

Thank you everyone. We will work on clearing out the tube and lowering the bedding at that side of the cage. He spent the first three days we had him in the happy henry home, and then moved out. He even blocked up the entrance tunnel to the tube with bedding and spent a few days accessing his den by squeezing through a tiny gap between the tube and the tank edge. This was most entertaining to watch. Think pancake hamster wiggling madly. It was very inelegant 😂

They are very entertaining to watch! And if you give them an easy route they seem to choose the hard route! Like avoid the ramp and pull themselves up onto something :ROFLMAO:
