Orko's adventures

I have made a big mistake. I spot cleaned Orko's cage removing the soiled bedding. I put him in the playpen to do this and he is back in his cage and it seems he is stressed as his toilet area is were his burrows are and I spoiled them by removing the bedding. I understand this is stressful but I thought he would make new burrows. He only has burrows on that side and now he keeps going up and down and running on his wheel like he is stressed.

Try not to worry, you haven’t made a mistake, spot cleaning is one of those necessities that hams really aren’t too happy about but it has to be done.
He will be a bit confused & a little stressed initially but it’s fine, he’ll soon get over it & make it his own again. Best to just leave them to it for a while.

Thank you. He is still out but he looks sleepy. I dont understand why he cant make a new tunnel so he can go to bed.

How long since you did the spot cleaning?
He will make another burrow when he’s ready he probably just needs a bit of time to settle & sort it out for himself.

I think 30 minutes. Its just unusual for him to be out this long in the day. He is on his wheel right now.

30 minutes is no time at all really.
Are you watching him by the cage or on camera? It’s probably best to leave him be & stay away for a bit while he decides what he wants to do.
It may be unusual for him to be out that long but then for him as you don’t need to do it often spot cleaning is an unusual event, just try to give him a little time & don’t worry.

I am sitting on my bed watching the camera. Thank you for the reassurance. He is so tiny and precious and I cannot bare him to be upset.

Is the bamboo root safe here? It is on a platform. I just saw Orko try to climb it so now I am unsure. 20230514_133916.jpg

Does it feel stable there or can you move it easily? I don’t think a robo would move it but if you’re in any doubt then I would move it somewhere it feels safer.

Sorry, I was not clear. There is no way he can move it as it is on a platform but can he fall off by trying to climb it? He is very adventurous and I just saw he tried to climb it and then wondered if it was okay to have it in his cage at all. I bought this before I adopted him and put it in his cage today for the first time after the spot clean.

Sorry I misunderstood, I wouldn’t have thought he’d fall but better wait for someone with robo experience.

When I have to touch Albert's burrows I always scatter some of his favourite seeds in that area so when he digs new burrows he finds them and hopefully sees digging new burrows as treat time. I think he does because he always eager to build new burrows.

That is a lovely idea. 🙂

Orko seems okay now. He is still coming out a lot which is unusual for him but he seems fine. I filmed a short clip without him seeing me.

It looks like Orko is just checking everything else is still in its place. Albert does that when ever I do any spot cleaning etc. It's almost like they do an assessment of what's been cleaned/change so they can make a mental note of what needs doing to make it how they want it. Don't forget Orko has high standards so he's probably going to do a few assessments to judge what needs doing 🐹💕

Just to add Albert always checks his favourite areas of his cage first. Hanging basket, sand bath, digbox and burrows.

Should Orko decide to jump off the bamboo root which would be more likely than a fall, he'd land on soft substrate. It wouldn't worry me but if you are worried it may be a good idea to place a small grass hide or something soft to step on under the root.

Lovely videos of Orko, especially the first one on the roof.
