Should Orko decide to jump off the bamboo root which would be more likely than a fall, he'd land on soft substrate. It wouldn't worry me but if you are worried it may be a good idea to place a small grass hide or something soft to step on under the root.

Lovely videos of Orko, especially the first one on the roof.
Thank you for the advice. I do not have a small grass hide but I can add more bedding.

Sorry about all the updates to Orko's thread today. I just wanted to update now I am calmer. I found Orko's toilet area which was in a different place to last time. It barely had any smell at all. Interestingly, when his bedding has wee on it the white bedding changes to beige colour. This is interesting to me as Orko is my first hamster.

Orko kept trying to escape the playpen which I popped him into while I did his cage. He kept trying to squash his body flat and get under it. I think this means he remembered he could do that when he was in the unsuitable playpen I bought. My partner gave him some bell pepper to distract him which worked a bit. He did have seeds and a mealworm in their too.

I really do not know how people change their hamsters cage regularly for e.g. when they decide to create a theme. Any change I make to his cage makes me feel so guilty at upsetting him.

Orko was out so much this afternoon so I am wondering if he is awake a lot more then I realise but he is under the bedding. I added some more bedding around his bamboo root to ensure it is safe and he came out right away and looked at me suspiciously. I thought that was so cute and brave. He even came a bit near my hands when I was putting out the bedding. I have a video to show him to show he is okay now and not upset. I understand nobody may want to watch it as I have posted a lot on here today but will post it anyway. :)

I'm not sure why you are upset tbh.
Spot cleaning needs to be done now and again. You wouldn't want Orko to sleep on damp or smelly bedding. Sure, they are not exactly happy about the inconvenience but that's all it is and they soon get over it.

Orko was sniffing around and chomping away on his whimzee looking perfectly normal to me.

Do you think that you may be overthinking this? You haven't done anything wrong. Not only that, Orko may be picking up on your feelings. I'd try and relax a bit and do what needs to be done without worrying about it.

Had another look at your bamboo root in the last video. It looks almost vertical. I don't think that Orko could climb it without sliding down so i'm not sure about its purpose now.
Maybe it was the angle and it looks different in reality.

Thank you. I just worry because changes stress hamsters out. Luckily Orko is fine now but he was stressed when he first went back in his cage. I am overthinking it, you are right.

The bamboo root was to give some shelter. It has a few parts to it but it is covered in bedding. Do you mean there is no purpose as Orko cannot use it? I just included it to add some shelter and Orko could nibble it. He likes to nibble grapevine wood and cork logs.

Just catching up :-) He is bound to be a skitty if there has been the odd change and spot clean, but he'll soon settle down again. He looks fine on that last video. The bamboo root does quite large, and it's possible he might run up it and jump off, but as long as he can't fall far or land on anything hard or pointy, it should be fine. It's hard to tell on the video, how far he could fall if he climbed to the top and jumped or fell off but it can't be that far. Probably best to miss playpen time for a couple of days now, while he adjusts and gets everything how he wants :-)

I know what you mean, I don't like upsetting them either, but he will soon put things right again.

Where did you get the bamboo root from by the way? I'm aware Rodipet don't sell them any more.

The bamboo root is from Hope's Healthy Treats. I bought it ages ago and was unsure if I should put it in Orko's cage. I decided to try it and he tried to climb the back of it. I thought it may be nice for some shelter for him. In the video he climbed over part of it. I have put bedding all around it. It is a large bamboo root. The platform is 50cm and also has his mushroom hide on it.

I will be sure not to put him in the playpen until he has settled again. He needs to adjust to the changes. I could remove the bamboo root but that will mean another change. Do you think I should?

I would leave it for now. They can be tricky to adjust to get them just how you want. I think ideally the tall part would be resting agains the wall of the cage, so he can run up and sit up there, which would be nice, but not jump off the edge. Although he could still fall sideways, but as long as there is plenty of substrate he'll be fine.

I see what you mean. I am really bad at arranging things. I do not have the flair. I noticed he was enjoying climbing over one part of it. Thank you for the tips. :)

Neither do I ha ha. I gave up using my vine branch because I could never get it quite right - but mainly because it's too short. I would maybe just keep an eye on it. Any chance you could get some photos. I couldn't really tell properly from the videos.

I removed it as I felt worried he may climb it and fall. I replaced it with the Rodipet tunnel he likes. He came out to see what I was doing. He is getting very brave. :)

Probably best if you were worried about it. Maybe another time. Which is the Rodipet tunnel?

Is is the yellow tunnel next to the side of the mushroom hide. He really likes the Rodipet Gobi stuff.

- yes I'm happy with that change ✔️
- mmm... could be better I'll change it once she's gone to bed
- mmm... that's a no from me ❌ I need to find a way to break it to her gently
🐹💕

With hamsters there is also the extra big ❌ of "I'm having a major hissy fit - how dare you".

Even when Orko is tired he will still get up to have a wash and then go back to bed. :)
