Pip the Robo

Maybe he needed to work up an appetite first! He’s really enjoying the pyramid once he found it.

Having done some maths, I reckon Pip will be about two years old. I'm not sure when he was born but was extremely tiny when he came to me 22 months ago, and is still a very small robo. Assuming he was about 8 weeks old when he came to me that would make him about 2 now.

Since the hot weather started I haven't seen him but I'm not worried about him as his veg is gone every morning. I'll have to rig the hamstercam on his cage again. It was rigged on Raffy's cage for a few nights but that was very awkward positioning to fit it in front of Raffy's cage and OH tripped over the cable and it fell over. Luckily it didn't hit the floor.

Aw, Pip is such a wonderful age. It is great to hear he is enjoying his veg every morning. :)

Thank you Rainbow. I did notice recently he is looking a bit scrawny, but old robos are known for getting a bit scraggy looking.

Some nightcam videos of Pip last night. He came out about half an hour after the lights were off. Pip is doing the opposite to most hamsters. Most hamsters are lying in their sand baths to keep cool. Pip seemed to ignore his sand bath entirely and spent long periods grooming inside his plastic greenhouse pod. Wheeling a bit, into the pod for a long groom and rummage around (snacking in there?), on the chair for a bit, up the ladder, back on the wheel, back in the pod for ages grooming, back on the chair for grooming. Then lots of wheel running. He was certainly very active last night. He really likes the chair as a grooming platform.

Edit - I've removed the videos due to bugs! See below.

Aw Pip really loves his chair! He was very active and he must be so clean after all the grooming he did. Lovely to see him. :)

Pip looks very happy and busy. Great to see what he's up to at night.

Edit - I have removed the videos as thanks to Rainbow's keen eyes, it seems there is a moth going in and out of the cage, and even walking up the ramp! Which I have now seen. This hot weather..............I was going to do a cage clean on Pip's cage last week-end but now it definitely needs doing! I hope I don't find too much! But it will need a full cage clean.

I didn't see the moth but my eyes are worse in this weather.

I know what you mean about the moth though. I saw a small one flattering around in the hamster room the other night and couldn't catch it. It disappeared behind the futon. Next day i pulled the futon out and checked and hoovered everywhere.

There's a good chance that you won't find anything in Pip's cage because there are a lot of moths about just now but better catch them early if they are in Pip's cage.

Thanks Beryl - my experience is if a moth is going in and out of the cage it's because it lives there/hatched out there! Ironically Pickles cage was in the same location last time I had this. Just working out a plan .................

Not in my experience. I saw a moth going in and out of Betsy's cage and saw one crawling on Rodney's house. I did a full clean on both cages but didn't find anymore evidence of moths in them.

That's reassuring and maybe I will nip it in the bud.

So Pip has been moved temporarily to the Mickey 2XL (narrow barred version of the hamster heaven for those who don’t know). It seemed really small after the Plaza. Having a breather and then about to start on his Plaza cage.

He was very cautious (you can just see him peering out of the sandbox on the last photo) but did have a good chew of the edge of the upside down hay house.

Aww Pip! He must be quite confused & that does seem small compared to his usual palace but I’m sure he’ll be ok for a while as you sort out the moth issue, hope it’s not too much of a problem & is all over soon.

I hope I don’t find anything either but I will need to do a full cage clean anyway as moth eggs can’t be seen with the naked eye. If there’s one it will have laid eggs.

You did a great job of setting up his temporary cage. He looks so cute peeking out.😍
