Hammie Heart

Hi, I've been wondering what type of seeds I can feed Little Bear. (Chinese) Any or all recommendations are welcomed! I'm just trying to get a feel of what seeds are safe and what seeds are not.

Elusive knows quite a bit about this as she's had a few chinese :) She'll probably be on in the morning (ie in about 10 hours time!)

Linseeds and hemp seeds are good and fine but there are various things for sprouting that elusive knows about.

Here are lots of options from my database:
Barley
Maize (aka corn)
Millet
Oats (whole are best but rolled are safe too)
Rye
Sorghum (aka milo, sorghum)
Wheat
Alfalfa seeds
Buckwheat
Caraway seed
Coriander seed
Grass seeds (but only if you can be sure it's not treated. I wouldn't use grass seeds intended for growing. Small bird foods often contain grass seeds which you can feed)
Quinoa
Anise seed
Basil seed
Camelina seed
Celery seed
Cumin seed
Dill seed
Fennel seed
Flaxseed (aka linseed)
Hemp seed
Milk thistle seed
Niger seed
Perilla seed
Pine nuts
Pumpkin, squash or melon seeds (I would wash the juice off the latter if giving to a Chinese)
Rapeseed
Safflower seed
Sesame seed
Sunflower seed

Apologies - I should have said Daisy and elusive :-) Both food gurus:-)

Do you have any sprays? That can provide some of the seeds :-) millet, sorghum and flax are popular.

Are the above safe for all hamsters?

Daisy got it covered!
I would just add that some seeds are very high in fat so go easy on those.
Sunflower, pumpkin, hemp & flax are all high in fat but flax is very good for them so a pinch of those daily is fine, nuts are all high in fat too so not too many of those.
My Chinese all love pine nuts but only get them as an occasional treat, they really seem to like buckwheat too which is very healthy for them, they can have it in the shell, shelled or sprouted.

Albert: will you please stop giving out unwanted advice. 🐹🙄

Okay! I am thinking about purchasing some sprays. Where and what kind? Is there a good bundle of different ones for under fifteen dollars? (I want to keep the price to a minimum because there are several other expensive things I need to buy for him)

I am not sure you will get them for that price. Are you in US? If so, Niteangel sprays on Amazon and Etsy are options. 😊

I'll look around Etsy, and Niteangel. (aren't their product really good?)

Yes things can add up. I don’t know of a good place in the US. Maybe Amazon.

There’s this one on Amazon. It’s not that cheap at $22 but a good selection

They should last a long time as well with that many. I haven’t used wheat before so you’d have to decide if the pointy bits were soft enough or a bit pokey.

How many should I put in his cage at a time? Does it depend on floorspace. (if so, five-hundred ten square inches)

I think that’s individual really - as many or few as you want. I’d maybe put three or four in at first and see if the hamster eats any of them. I think most people would put a bit more than that in. But you could add more later. Even if your hamster doesn’t seem interested in eating them, they seem to like them there and it gives shelter as well so they don’t feel so exposed.

He already has Full Cheeks Millet Clusters as well.
Just in case you do not know, you can freeze the sprays for a week before putting them in your hamsters cage. This is just a precaution in cause there are any bugs. :)
