Second chance hamsters

Oh so he's not that old then. I thought he must be an older hamster by the look of him, although it's hard to tell from a photo. Glad you're getting him.

I'm curious to see what i'll find because i have no idea what condition he's in now. This photo is at least three weeks old and one of the less worrying ones.

It does sound very uncertain but I hope the little guy is ok & there’s nothing that some serious TLC won’t help with, whatever state he’s in I know you’ll give him your best.

Hi Beryl, Could you please list which websites you look at for unwanted hamsters. It would be nice to have a list for other people who might be interested in saving an unwanted hamster.

Gumtree, pets4homes, freeads and preloved.

Sometimes people advertise a hamster on gumtree under hamster cages and accessories to avoid paying the £2.99 fee. The other sites are free.

Shpock prohibits the sale of animals which doesn't stop people from advertising a hamster cage with a hamster in it. Our Betsy came from there.

Thank you Beryl 😊

People also sell them on Facebook Marketplace sometimes, although it's against the rules. I'm not really sure how they get past the censors because I tried to sell a guinea pig house (definitely sans guinea pigs) on there once and it kept being automatically flagged, and yet somehow people manage to list hamsters.

There are also rescue groups where people post about hamsters needing homes. I got my Athena from a Facebook advert.

I'm at work until 08.00 tomorrow and will then go and collect Robo, all being equal.

Got the Robo in a Spelos, no wheel, no sand, no toys just some fluffy bed thing. I've seen a nose briefly poking out and will get a good look when we get home. The poops look normal which is promising.

No wheel even? Poor thing. He doesn't know it yet but he's really landed on his feet getting a home with you.

Thank goodness you found him. He must be so stressed not having a wheel. Poor little boy.

So glad you got him, so sad to see how deprived he’s been but he’ll have the best care now.

Glad you got him too. My first robot was from an accidental litter. They got two same sex robos from a pet shop who turned out not to be same sex. When I went to pick him up, their own hamsters (the parents, which they were keeping) were in small cages with just a thin layer of wood shavings and a little plastic house. At least they had a wheel and a wooden log. I decided to email them later and see if I could diplomatically suggest some current thinking on how hamsters should be housed. They didn't respond negatively but neither did they confirm they would change anything. The male was in a cage that was too tall, with semi vertical tubes. I did kind of worry about them later.

Those cages should only be marketed as pet carriers.

Happy to say that little Robo seems to be absolutely fine. He was very thirsty which wasn't surprising going by the empty bottle. He's definitely a boy and very small so have to make an adjustement to his foster cage. He should grow yet and when the time is right, i'll put him up for adoption to give him the chance of the life he deserves.

He’s adorable & does look well & quite perky! So lovely to see him & to see he’s survived his horrible home so well, I’m sure he’s going to love exploring his new home now.

He's so sweet :-) Glad he's ok.

He is so beautiful! He looks very alert and well despite his poor start in life. I am so happy he is safe now.

He looked truly awful in the ad three weeks ago and i didn't expect him to look so well.

First of all he had a long drink then jumped into his food bowl to fill his pouches and then he started to dig in the substrate.

Lawrence was on woodshavings without any bedding...
