I'm not the only non-British person here? Hehe. I would have been confused too.

Zak is so cute to watch!! I wish I could see him in person! He seems like he's having a really fun time. I love watching him eating especially. 🥰 I want to hold him and feed him a treat, if he wouldn't be too scared!

Great explanation of a very confusing concept Maz!
Just to be more confusing I call Zak’s food his afternoon tea (usually tea & cakes or sandwiches in the afternoon for us Brits!) now he’s so old his feeding routine is very different.

I was honestly researching if hamsters could have tea or not in the interim, to be honest I could see the plants without caffeine being interesting to them.

Thanks for educating me guys, it's very nice of Zak to get up for it! Early greetings are the best

The long free roaming walks around the house are over now, he slowed down to about once a day for a bit but the last few days he’s just coming out for his crocks, still insists on eating them on the carpet & eagerly climbs out of the cage, five times today already I think, he’s still pretty feisty with those crocks too bless him but he has deteriorated rapidly the last few days.
He’s been a bit incontinent for a while but that got a whole lot worse, the last couple of days I had to remove at least some of his bedding about 3 or 4 times a day & it was really wet, he’s lost weight, he looks so tiny & fragile now & it began to feel as though some of his spirit had gone, yesterday his ears were really down which is so unlike my happy little man.
I expect his kidneys are beginning to fail now & the symptoms are very much like diabetes but probably just down to his organs getting weaker, he’s always hungry & eats loads but I have cut back on his protein more now, trying to keep a balance between what he wants & enjoys & not giving him too much of anything that is going to cause him more discomfort or pain.
I started him on a homeopathic remedy yesterday, I know we’re on borrowed time & don’t expect miracles but there’s a definite improvement today, his ears are back up, not quite as perky as usual but much better & his incontinence has improved quite a bit.

It’s so sad to see him like this but I’m confident he’s comfortable enough & definitely still enjoying some of his favourite things, can’t hope for more than that really.

It is so cute how he still loves his crock treats. Sounds like Zak is in the best care possible with you.

Zak has done so well for such an elderly gentleman. If he has perked up a little today under your skilled care elusive, then he has still some time left with you. His crocks still interest him and he gives them a good go.
This last period is always so hard but he knows he has the best love and care and that is what will sustain him for as long he has the will to go on.

So sorry to hear he is seeming frail now. It's hard to know from one day to the next. But lovely he still likes coming out for his crocks.

Thank you, it always helps to be amongst you all knowing you understand.

🫂- that's supposed to be a hug but it looks like a present to me!

It's like there's something in the air when our little friends want to be with us but also want to find the path to the rainbow bridge.

It's a bittersweet time full of conscious living while trying to let go.

Hugs from me and furry family.

Well I have no idea how he does it but Zak really perked up again yesterday, he’s not ready to give up yet!
He came out for crocks several times during the day & was really getting stuck into those, then on his last time out he really surprised me when he suddenly set off on one of his walks! He’s been a lot more wobbly & falling over more but he was walking a bit more steadily again too.
His ears are back up which is lovely to see.
He’s still incredibly frail looking & just eats & sleeps really but he does seem happier & is giving me whisker kisses again so I must be doing something right! He looks really scruffy & I don’t think he grooms at all now but his coat is still really soft, silky & dense, he had been feeling quite cold over the weekend but he was nice & warm again yesterday & no longer smells of pee just that nice hammy smell!
I think I’m in for some real ups & downs now but it looks like we still have more pecious time.

Zak really is a miracle. I've never heard of a 4 year old hamster who keeps bouncing back like that. Zak equals Zest. For life.

I haven’t either! I’ve had a fair few elderly hamsters now & thought I knew all the signs of when the end was near but Zak is determined to keep surprising me, bless him.

Lovely to hear Zak has had a walk and his ears are back up. It must be your lovely care and all the hugs the forum sent him 🐹💕

Wow, Zak really is full of surprises! I find it adorable to hear how much he loves crock treats. :)

That is lovely news :-) I had been thinking about you both and expecting the worst - and then this lovely surprise. Zak is a real little trooper.
