Dumbo

🫂 Such a hard day for you - I'm so sorry 🫂

Just a thought - do you have any gas in your home? It could be worth getting a carbon monoxide detector. I remember a hamster owner/breeder who lost a lot of hamsters and it turned out to be carbon monoxide. Water can be another thing but assume you use bottled water. It was at a low enough level it didn't directly affect the humans. But it's possible he was just born with a genetic respiratory issue - hence the sneezing.

I'm sorry to hear this, he was such a cute little boy, and he had a nice life with you. Play well beautiful Dumbo

Thanks Socks Mom, Maz and Hank, im truly glad Dumbo have a forum that care for him.

@Socks Mum i will consider to have air purifier machine. I bought a bamboo charcoal purifier bag before and think that was enough to cover his area. I already bought temperature included with hygrometer.

@Maz : i dont have any gas inside my home. If its a carbon monoxide, maybe from cigarette because my uncle is smoker, but never smoke inside of hamster room instead he smoked in the living room which is close to the room. The room have an open ventilation in the morning until afternoon, however i put a fan to push away the cigarette smell.20240924_211349.jpg
This is Dumbo Room.

@Hank : thanks a lot hank, Dumbo so happy to know you have been care about him.

Still have a lot things to give Dumbo and he left it unpacked. This is to keep him accompanied inside the cage.

I was wondering about Strep A. People can carry the bacteria, which causes sore throats, but is usually mild in healthy people. You can carry it without knowing it. I wonder if it might infect a hamster. You can get inexpensive test kits that will tell you whether or not you have Strep A.

So sorry to hear Dumbo passed away he was such a lovely boy loved his photos

It is just very sad and it's natural to wonder why, but often it is genetic. It's possible it was a respiratory infection but he'd had antibiotics so it seems unlikely and he wasn't presenting as having difficulty breathing. No, occasional smoking wouldn't have caused it.

I'm so sorry to hear about Dumbo, such sad news. He was a beautiful boy and was lucky to have you, even for such a short time. Run free handsome little man.

I am so sorry to hear this, Dumbo was adorable. Maz brings up a good point, I did lose 3 hamsters due to bad water in my building that I wasn't aware of sadly. It might be worth getting it checked out.

Thanks Jain, Steve and Ilguy for those beautiful and comfort words, umbo sure so happy to hear that.

@Socks Mum : does Strap A test kit is the same as covid test? I found a strep A kit however the shop said its also for covid.

@Maz : thanks Maz, i will take an account to consider everything before bring another hamster. Does young hamster tend to get sick?

@ilguy : hopefully the next journey will be the same as you, ilguy.

May i ask, should i throw away all the bedding? Or can i reuse it?

The Strep A kit is used the same way as the COVID kit, but I think it needs to be specific to Strep A. It should be available online and shouldn't be expensive.
It would be best to dispose of the old bedding I think.
The caffeine in tea I'm not sure about. It might be better not to use it.
I hope there is a good hamster around the corner for you who will stay with you for a long life.

Agree it would be better to throw the old bedding - so sorry.
It's probably better not to give tea stalks due to the caffeine, as it would be of no benefit to a hamster, but I don't think it would have caused him harm - unless he was allergic to it - caffeine can make the heart race though - it's a stimulant - but you would have noticed his behaviour changing if it had been an issue. It is much more likely to be genetic. He was very very small when he came to you. It is so sad that sometimes baby hamsters are born with genetic heart conditions and breeding genetics are not always known by the breeders. I know you got him from a breeder rather than a pet shop, but even with NHC breeders (with an ancestry of genetics), occasionally one of the litter just dies young. Just as with humans - 3 children may be fit and healthy and the fourth born with a genetic illness that doesn't show at first.

Maybe you could look out for a hamster that needs adopting - if someone needs to rehome a hamster. If they've survived long enough to need adopting and are active and healthy, you can be sure they are healthy :-) Although I know it's not easy to find a hamster to adopt as I have that problem in my area.

Young hamsters don't necessarily get sick unless they have a genetic issue. Young hamsters can get wet tail - often picked up in a pet store and if they have a lot of stress when moved to a new cage that isn't set up well and they are cleaned out daily for example. But you would know about that as it's a lot of diarrhoea. And your set up was very good for a hamster.

I am so very sorry that your lovely Dumbo has died. He was such a lovely hamster and you gave him such dedicated care and attention.

RIP Dumbo.
