Eddie - I get miffed because my sand bath does not need cleaning out. I have put in a great deal of effort to get it just how I want it and then it is all ruined.

Eddie demanded to get let out again a little while ago. He run straight to the digbox and put some considerable effort into digging. He then came running back to me with full pouches ready to go home.

I wonder what Lilly will have to say about that tomorrow morning.....

Aww poor Eddie having his precious sand jar messed with! Reminds me of Meri with her wheel, it was a great game trying to put it back while she ran around the wheel platform in protest!
He sounds as though he made up for it having lots of fun out of the cage, I don’t think Lilly will be too pleased with his efforts though!

Lilly hasn't appeared yet but Eddie was on his shelf asking to come out this morning!

He went straight to Lilly's hoard by the sandbath and now he's sitting in the sand munching.

There's definitely some rivalry going on between those two.

Eddie happily munching this morning.

OH says that when he gets up during the night Eddie comes out of his jar and meerkats looking up at him as if to say 'where are my seeds'. Eddie knows fine that OH drops a few linseeds in when he does that.

What a photo! - Eddie is almost round and loving his seeds.

Eddie enjoying his Sunday treat.
Can't let him out because Lilly is out so it was a good time for his treat.
Eddie's been out for ages last night though.

He seems to be doing really well :-) And is enjoying that treat.

I think Eddie's illness is starting to affect his mental health. His behaviour has been changing for a while but it hasn't caused reason for concern until fairly recently.

Eddie has started to bar chew obsessively. It's like a compulsion and he still chews when i open his door, talk to him or stroke him. I attached an acrylic panel but he just goes and chews elsewhere, tried cardboard, distracting methods, extra attention and a lot of out of cage time but nothing worked. Did all the routine checks in his cage of course.

He's not using his wheel like he used to and he's never used the whole cage so it's not a matter of cage rage because the cage is too small.

When he's out he just sits in the sandpit and lately he's been sitting under the carrot house in the digbox.

I spotclean his cage daily but it's coming to a point where the tubes are no longer practical because his wee leaks out, the shelves and hides are sticky and i have to throw things like coconut and degu shelves out. I'm forever wiping, exchanging and washing but that in itself must be upsetting for him.

Today i made a mental list of the things that are important to Eddie and set up a bin cage the same size as the digbox. I bought a carrot house and got a box to put it in then added his favourite treats toy, his green hide, sand jar, a coconut and tunnel plus a small wheel.
When Eddie woke up tonight he went straight to the bars and became frantic. I scooped him up and put him in the bin cage. Eddie explored it and seemed agitated at first but then calmed down and sat in his green hide washing. I put treats on his toy and he got and ate them.
He's in the carrot house now and i think that he needs to rest, destress and refocus if that's even possible.

I'm trying to figure out where to go from here cagewise. The Hamster Heaven isn't working anymore.

I’m really sorry to hear that things have got so difficult with Eddie, it is hard to know what to do sometimes especially in a situation like this where you have no choice but to keep doing all the cleaning & changing things which he’s bound to find stressful but that looks like a good solution for him for now anyway, hopefully he’ll settle down a bit. I’m not sure what else you can do really but you’re clearly doing your best for him.
