Jas, the hamster formally known as Jasper

I can remember where in you are located but I use the coco fibre from pets at home. It comes in a block in the reptile section. As long as it's meant for pets it'll be ok to use. Don't be afraid to look in the reptile, bird or even aquatic section of pet shops for a few bits and pieces. I have used beech ships for my syrians as well as shredded paper, soft meadow hay and aspen. Don't be afraid to mix substrates in dig boxes, although don't mix anything with coco coir as it'll probably go mouldy.

I gave Jas some cooked chicken today, she ate some then pouched it, do I need to find it? I'm assuming I can't leave it? Or will she probably, just eat it while she's hiding?

Ugh - I hate it when they do that :ROFLMAO: . Was she in the cage or out of the cage? Our first hamster would just eat what he wanted - out of the cage - and leave the rest. I got blase. Our second one did what Jas did and pouch it. I tried to get him to depouch it and that wasn't working! So I did go rummaging about in the hoard and house to try and find it and didn't find anything, so he must have eaten it.

One thing you could try, if they're out of the cage when they pouch it - is leave them out longer, because then they sometimes depouch rather than wait to go back to the cage any longer.

She was in her cage, she started to eat it, then pouched it. I'll try and see if I can find anything, but I don't think I will manage it. It was a very small piece, I'm just a little worried about her trying to eat it later.

I know, it is worrying. I don't think she will hoard it somehow. But maybe later tonight you could have a poke around in her hoard/house.

Thank you, I will take look. She doesn't usually hoard fresh food, sometimes she will pouch it, but then eats it in private.

My hamster's have done that. I'm yet to have one that hoards fresh food thankfully. Probably because it's considered a high value food. I'm sure Jas is eating it in private, but as Maz said, have a look later to make sure for peace of mind.

Hi everyone, a bit random, and I know it's not a great picture. Is this a scent gland? I can only see on one side and it's not been this prominent before

Te, he, they all love a carrot topped house 😀

A little difficult to tell but I’m going to say yes as this is the area where they are. Hams scent gland is prominent in this photo, his show more I guess due to his colour. When he’s out roaming they always look bigger as he’s rubbing his scent everywhere.

If you mean the slightly different coloured patch, it does look in the area of the scent glands. They can get a bit greasy. Is that the change you noticed? No actual swelling or lumps?

They can be more obvious on some colours than others. My previous hamsters scent glands have been very noticeable - like Zara's photo of Hams. Raffy's are barely noticeable, maybe because of his lighter colouring. That may be the same with a darker coloured hamster too. You can only just see his scent gland area on these photos. Like a slightly indented or different coloured patch.

Thank you. I know with any other picture of a hamster I would have said scent gland as well, but just wanted to check. It's the same spot as the other picture, so thank you for the reference. it looks a little balder to be honest, but she is scenting a lot. It's not a lump or swollen, but maybe a bit greasy? Strange it's only on one side?

They do look quite bald generally - no hair growing on the scent gland. She has maybe been rubbing one side more than the other when scent marking. It's quite normal for them to seem a bit greasy sometimes though :)

Yes, strange just the one side, but maybe it’s just her preference when she’s scenting so more obvious on this side.

I haven't seen that one before. I wonder if the compartments might be a bit small for a Syrian if the size is 30cm by 30cm overall - but I guess you could take some out to make bigger compartments. I had something similar (a huge cardboard maze) for our first hamster and he wasn't that interested. He'd just sit in one compartment having a wash! I suspect a Syrian would just climb over the top of it tbh as it's only 12cm tall.

Personally I'd give that one a miss, but I might be wrong.

I was thinking that, it looks a bit like the MCH, it was the connection that looked good. I'll see what else there might be 🙂

If I wrote this last week, I'm not sure would have believed me, but Jas is out for her third outing of the day. I finished work a bit earlier, as I wasn't feeling great and got a bit confused by the times, so she first came out at about 5:40. She had been chewing, so came out again and even had a free roam. Then she was waiting so patiently by her door a minute ago, I offered the taxi and she jumped right in
