Such a beautiful photo of Kuy :) Yes beech wood shavings are fine. Technically a hamster can be allergic to any type of wood whether it's a hardwood or a softwood (beech is a hardwood hence safe) - but hopefully that won't be an issue. You might find they're a bit scratchy possibly so you could maybe mix them with something like Kaytee or Carefresh (can't remember which one you can get now). The sand - I don't think you need to change it that often unless it's pee'd in really.

I would like to try that, since it looks more promising rather than the other.

both of carefresh and kaytee are not available in here 🥲
almost all type of tissue / papper beddings in here is a local handmade product. Gladly, most of seller is typically proper hamster owners.

glad to hear it! I try to smell the sand before, but it doesnt have any pee scent so i thought i would be safe. I dont change it from the beginning Kuy arrived until now, i just fill it more if i feel the volume is decrease.

Im so sorry for belated Christmas greetings.
Had a family meeting a whole week.

Kuy really not interested with free roaming, he is more comfortable inside the cage. Maybe around 30 or 60 minutes of free roaming just enough for him to ask to get him back to his cage.

He is more attach to his wheel inside the cage rather than the one i used in his playpen. Well, the taxi into playpen will miss the passengers for awhile. He came out only 3 - 4 times a week, but dont worry he looks all healthy and eats a lot.

Perhaps having lots of visitors made him feel a bit shy. Great to hear he is well ❤️ He clearly loves his wheel 🛞

Belated Merry Christmas and Happy New year! Kuy is adorable. Our Cinnamon didn't care for free roam time either- honestly, he didn't even last 30 minutes! After awhile I just came to terms that he was really very comfortable in this cage. He did his wheel at night, foraged for food, and showed no evidence of anxiety or restlessness- he just liked his routine! Kuy is lovely.

Kuy have a new spot for hiding, that is under the platform. Enjoying some of porridge as a treat inside playpen meanwhile i did some spot clean.

A hot update in here, some of local breeder here does some horrible things to hamsters. They are coloring the hamster fur using a hair color, these day breeder really did an awful act to attract customer especially kids to buy a hamster. Sad to see this scenery.
 
I wanted to add both a happy and a sad face to that last post of yours :-) Happy because Kuy looks so incredibly cute. Sad at the awful things breeders are doing. Regulations vary in different countries, and animal welfare organisations aren't that good at closing down bad breeders even in the Uk. But is there an animal welfare organisation you can report them to?
 
Hair dye can produce strong allergic reactions and smells unpleasant. It must be awful for hamsters.

There is no animal welfare in here especially for hamster to report them. Only hamsters lover community (a local seedmix seller made a group for hamster owners to share each other) tried to confront them.

@Socks Mum thanks socks mom, Kuy really enjoy eats flaxseed and also quinoa. Glad he is already grooming his coat before taking the photo. 🤣
 
That is a shame. Perhaps you could get the local newspaper to run a story on it and get them shamed into not doing it?

Thats kinda hard, a lot people in here still not aware to animal life, a lot of animal abuse in here especially dog and cat. Dog and cat lover have an organization but can't reduce the awareness to not abuse. People still does killing for consuming until killing for having fun especially for dog and cat. What animal lovers in here can do is critize the abuser through social media until they feel bad about it.

Seems i dont have anything new here,
A bit update of Kuy

He is looking so healthy and growing faster. Today, i tried to scale him and his weight is on 92gr. His appetite looks so good and he already learn to pee on his litter tray. Good news, he is also already calm when i hold him up.

Thanks Socks Mom, it was a long journey for bonding with him. Fortunately, Kuy really adapt well with human presence. So he wouldn't suprised anymore if anyone near him.

His favorite treat until now are fresh veggies and fruit, and wallnut. I makes some hamster porridge for him as well with pumpkin seed and quinoa as a topping. 😊 oh! He love cheese as well.
