Pip the Robo

Platforms and house are 30cm tall. Maximum substrate I can have with the two lower panels is 28cm deep so it doesn’t come over the top. So it will probably be about 27cm (about 11”) deep to allow a couple of inches of space under the shelves.

So glad to hear it’s all coming together now, you’ve worked hard on that & it does look great, I’m sure Pip is going to love it when he gets to move back in.

If I can get the third leg on the shelves! Even if I get the leg the right length, it needs glueing on and keeping in place while it’s setting. I was thinking of blue tak to hold it in place.

Irony is I probably could have fitted thin plywood corner shelves above the Perspex. But I can’t get hold of those any more. They came from a German seller on Amazon. They were great but once used a couple of times the internal fixings would come out.

Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a medium height cage! Pip was happy enough with 8 to 10” of substrate but the cage was still too tall really.

The blue tack idea is a good one. Must keep that in mind.
I shy away from platforms in a barred cage unless i can plonk one right in the middle.

This is a major project but will be well worth the effort in the end. It's coming together nicely. Looking forward to watch Pip's tail disappear down a burrow. He can createca whole underground world in there.
A Robo's dream coming true.

Hopefully the rasp will do the job with the leg, it is a pain when you only need to take a small amount off.
Blue tack might work as long as it doesn’t get stuck to the glue!

A medium height cage would be so nice, it’s what we all seem to want but no one thinks to make one!

Oh heck I didn’t think about the blue tack sticking to the glue! Hopefully that won’t happen as I only put the glue in the middle so it didn’t come out at the edges.

So this is a thankless job these platform legs. After taking just over 1mm off a leg it was just the right height to slide under the platform. But then once in place in the middle, it was too short! The cage base isn’t flat. Also the cage base is different levels of flatness at the front and back corners. So the length that’s right for one shelf isn’t any good for the other shelf. I do have one leg glueing on though, held in place with blue tack. If it comes to it I’ll just use the one shelf.

Platforms and cage bases definitely don’t mix well. When I looked again, shelves wouldn’t have been an option anyway as they would be too high up above the Perspex.

Apart from the platforms, it’s not really a major project. The house and shelter already had legs on and just needed longer thin dowels attaching. That’s easy as you have the flat height of the house to glue them to. And the Perspex just screws on. It’s just the platforms that are such a fiddle.

I know once all that substrate is in, they would stand up fine anyway - even if one leg was 1 or 2mm too short. But if using both of them I need them level and the same height. Which might not be possible with a cage base that isn’t flat in various places.

Platforms are only really for tanks where they work very well.

Probably would have been easier to just make some and screw legs in from the top where you want them.

It certainly is a bit of a faff! I haven’t tried making platforms that high but I would think they will be fine once the legs are pushed into all that substrate they should be pretty much level & the legs will still give enough support.

I think so too but they may not be exactly the same height/level. The idea was they would make one long platform at that end, with one in each corner. There is only about a 2cm gap between them that I was going to bridge somehow. When trying it out, getting both of them actually level and the same level wasn't easy. Which is why I may only use one of them.

If it really bothers you that much why don't you connect them by glueing on a square piece of wood that could also act as a bridge?
It wouldn't bother me because the substrate will adjust them.

Does the substrate come up to the level of the platform or is it lower? It’s such a small gap & I’m sure it won’t really matter if they aren’t completely level, I don’t think it would be a problem for Pip anyway.

Pip doesn’t really burrow anyway :-). He already had 8 to 10” of bedding in the cage before. He had one tunnel from under his house to under a nearby shelter and that was it. And that wouldn’t be viewable from the front anyway.

The bedding height is mainly to lower the cage height - but does give him the option as well. Also he’s getting older so may prefer just a level surface.

Well a tiny bit of bluetack did stick to the very edges at one side. But it was easily sanded off afterwards.

It’s not the gap between the shelves being slightly uneven that bothers me - it’s the fact they aren’t level on top. So lean forwards slightly. One of those really annoying little things. But hopefully it’ll work out ok.

Maybe you could glue small round pieces of cardboard under the front legs.

To be honest I’m so sick of fiddling with them I’m just going to jiggle about when they’re in the substrate and see what happens :)

I’m beginning to wish I was setting up a Plaza 120 as well - much easier to fit more in.

My large cork log is very wide - and low! It’s fine for a Robo but wouldn’t be any good for a Syrian.

Heard nothing back from Getzoo! I had a standard email from Hope’s Healthy treats asking me for feedback! They haven’t replied to my email about the broken cork log yet so assume the feedback one was computer generated.

It is good the cork log will be suitable for Pip.

What a shame you have not heard back from either companies. I hope they reply to you soon.

I’m sure the shelves will work ok, I can imagine how you must have had enough of fiddling by now!
At least Pip can enjoy the cork log, he’ll like that.
It is really frustrating when you can’t get a response from companies, I’ve not used Hopes healthy treats but I am surprised at Getzoo, thought they would be better than that.
I’ve had feedback emails before receiving things too which I always find a bit annoying!

The cage is looking great with all the perspex Maz, I’m sure the platforms will work out when the substrate is in. Pip will think it’s great. 🙂
