Pip the Robo

Thanks Elusive - yes I have taken a break :) . I am too cross to do anything else today. Terrible quality control. Everything else is ready to go just about.

Well I think I am grounded for a few days as one of my wrists is swollen and is painful - after too much hard work sanding very hard hardwood. Had a sprain there before so it's a weak spot. Which is why I was so cross about it. But will need to rest it for a few days now. Poor Pip will have to wait a bit longer for his cage move again.

Maybe you could rethink the set up and use strong cardboard boxes cut into platforms until your wrist is better.

It is very annoying though and you should email a complaint to Getzoo. They may give you a part refund as a good will gesture.

I tried emailing them via their site form and it wasn't working properly . It kept failing to send,

Thanks Beryl. Their contact messaging service just fails and keeps asking you to put your name in, then fails again. I've ended up messaging them on Instagram! I can't send them back now I've tried sanding them, but maybe they will offer a partial refund - or maybe not!

I'll just need to wait a bit longer - my left hand is out of action for now so not the time to set the cage up. The little sharp nib on the rodipet hide just chipped off when I sanded it so that is sorted now. There was the odd little sharp nib here and there that needed rubbing off.

I wonder how many people check the inside of ceramic hides. I always run my fingers through them to check for sharp pieces of ceramic and pick the best one.

The mushrooms i buy online from Wundapets sometimes have a sharp bit of glaze which is easily sanded off.

I just thought of this as you mentioned your Rodipet bottle holder.

I checked the inside too :-) There were some round the rim. Getzoo Instagram gave me an automatic response saying please use our website form (which doesn't work) or email us at ......................So I now have an email address!

Good, as they really ought to know your thoughts.
I'm curious to hear what they have to say about it.

They'll probably just say sorry - but you can't return it if it's had something done to it.

Pip still runs away when he sees me, which is a bit sad. So taming and trust has definitely regressed. I hope it improves once he's back in his old cage again. Having bought the perspex panels to turn his Plaza into a tank, I am still keen to have the set up I'd planned, rather than just his old set up back again - and I want it to be safe for him as he gets older. The right hand side of his cage would be the same as before and familiar (except without the shelves above his house). The left hand side would be similar to before but with slightly different shelf arrangement.

I actually don't want to use the old shelf now as it reduced the floor space quite a bit and I'd like to add more at floor level. So I will probably use the corner shelves now I've sanded the dowels (despite it being a nightmare to do the other day). If I can get a third leg attached in the middle.

Aw, I am sorry to hear Pip is running away when he sees you.

The plans you have for his new set up sound perfect for him in his advancing years.

The design of the shelves is actually quite good - if the dowels and holes had been the right size. A small thing of glue is supplied (which I think is Ponal) and you fill the holes with the glue and then push the legs part way in. So it means the legs are supported when the glue is drying. Getting the height of the third leg right could be tricky, and glueing it on, because that will just attach to the underside of the shelf without a hole to go into.

Thank you. I was very tempted just to set it back up how it was before, as that would be a lot easier. But then it wouldn't be as safe as I don't want to leave the hammocks in or have him climbing in that area.

Sorry to hear Pip has gone a bit shy & runs off, it has been a bit of an upheaval for both of you & I hope he settles down & gets back to his old self once he gets back into his old cage.
I can imagine that you would be tempted to just set it up as it was after all the set backs! Hope it all gets a bit easier & you can get it sorted soon.

Pip's probably in a huff and it doesn't take much for a Robo to get into a strop.

I'm sure he'll snap out of it once he moves back into his own place.

I reassembled Pip’s Plaza cage yesterday and fitted most of the Perspex panels. Been doing it a bit at a time in between other things. So he has 21cm high Perspex at the bottom and 7cm high Perspex round the top, which leaves a gap of bars about 6cm (2.5”) all the way round. So he can still sniff. The barred section is just above his platform, but he can’t climb to the top because of the top Perspex all round.

One half of the back Perspex is slightly lower to fit the wheel in ok. And I’m just working out a removable piece for the front so the bedding is the same depth right through the cage.

The platforms have had a little corner cut off so they fit right in the corner of the plaza. They just need a third leg attaching now in the middle - so they stand up on their own.

That’s the fiddly bit at the moment. I have some pine dowels for that - easier to work with. But it’s hard to get a very small amount cut off so the leg is the same height as the inset legs. First attempt didn’t work and that one is too short now. I’m not even attempting it with a slightly stiff wrist soon. OH reckons he can use a rasp to rub it down. It only needs about 2 to 3mm coming off.

I temporarily put the house and wheel in to work out placement, but so far it’s going to plan. Once I get the third leg on the shelves I’ll be ready to finish setting the cage up so Pip can move back in. But a few things on this week end so it’s likely to be a few more days.

Pip likes the carrot cottage in his temporary cage. He sits on top and nibbles. So I added a few linseeds on their last night as well.

You can just about see the barred gap on the second photo as the Perspex bits have reflections.

So the idea is to raise everything and have deeper substrate so the cage is lower. It’s quite low over the house and platforms. But still plenty of floorspace

It would look much nicer with full perspective and no bolts but I wanted some extra ventilation. I quite look the quirky look of the bolts anyway .

Wow, that looks brilliant already! I also like the look of the bolts. :)

I’ve got the last piece of Perspex in. It’s the other half of the lower 14cm back piece to sit across the front door. It’s longer than needed but it sits behind the left front piece, which holds it on place from behind because it’s bolted on. So that front piece will be easily removable If and when doing a cage clean etc. I just need to push all the bedding back out of the way, undo one bolt and lift that front piece out. I’ll take it out again now until I’ve finished setting up the cage.

There is still a plenty large enough door for interaction above the Perspex.
