Socks: Mouseworks Dynamic Cardboard Redesign and Basic Tunneling

Thank you! His wheel was catching the bars, making a strange shimmery metallic sound. I was worried that it might be audible to the neighbour, so I fumbled around. Socks got off and squeezed under the wheel, something he doesn't usually do, so I couldn't drag it away from the bars. Eventually I tried picking it up and Socks leapt out in a panic. He ran in a circle and I thought he was going to flump off into his house, but he turned back and lay down in his sand bath instead, aw! ❤️🐹
He got back on his wheel and ran like crazy for a while, but when I went back to bed, he soon stopped and went back into his MCH 🛏

Yes, it started squeaking, thumping, rattling and making twanging alien type music, it was rather nice and I think Socks liked it. How to explain that I need to move the wheel? 🤔

Oh I bet he loved those sunflower shoots, some great treats you're giving Socks
Thank you! They are from his seed mix. The challenge is to keep the water clean and refresh it often as they can harbour bacteria when soaked.

As I was gazing at my new fish tank, I noticed a small black form at his bowl. He had already pouched his dinner and was about to go back into his MCH. He nodded to me amiably and smiled for a moment and then went inside. Someone suggested knocking on the door to get the hamster to come out for a treat. I tried this politely and some cautious whiskers appeared from within, but no more, the equivalent of keeping the chain on. He dodged backwards a few paces when I held out a sunflower seed, but then returned and took it away into his larder. His current tunnel system is very carefully hidden and starts under the ramp used to come in through his roof hole, so no one would suspect it of being there unless they had seen the earlier prototype.

Socks had a few runs on his wheel after I went to bed. At 4am we had a playpen session, but I think the sand in his big sandbath was too cold and he went back into his taxi tube readily enough. This is proving to be a great success and avoids bumps against cage bars and reduces the risk of falls while travelling to and from his playpen.
He ran on the wheel for a short while longer and then went to bed 🛏🌙

Laundry day and the heating had come on just now. Settling down with Fishy Foo to put the fins up for a moment, (he sits on his Anubia leaf and I slouch on two chairs), I spied the form of a hamster imprinted into the greens in Sock's watermelon bowl. I had disturbed him. Within a short while, Socks appeared and started pouching the stuff eagerly. I was very pleased when he stayed for a pat and picked him up using the bowl (my resolution is to use his concertina tunnel to avoid any more bumps). He was a bit restless, so after a quick stroke, I put him back in the cage and he took the coriander leaves from me with a polite thank you, folded them up and put them in his pouches. It was really nice to stroke him again. His scent glands look a bit bare, but otherwise he seems OK. His coat seems to be turning a bit lighter in places. I didn't get to weigh him, but he looks OK and in good shape ❤️🐹
Its nice to know he's looking ok

There was a strange, intermittent sound at about 2am last night. It was Socks on his wheel. So I got up to check the aquarium filter to see if it was blocked, which it wasn't, and then fell back into bed 😴 I realised much later that it was Socks on his wheel. Socks did some solo running last night. His stash tunnel has developed a hill shaped roof. It might be getting a bit full, I think 🤔

I put out Socks' greens this evening and went off to feed the guppies, thinking there would be plenty of time before he appeared for his dinner. However I fed him a bit earlier yesterday by hand and I think he has already taken on the new schedule. I thought I would just let him do his own thing tonight. Anyway the greens disappeared by sleight of paw. I swear he held his pouch open with one paw and shovelled them in with the other he was so quick. There was something left in the bottom of the bowl! A dark red dried rose bud and a small, twisty piece of dandelion root. Ah, Socks is a romantic at heart ❤️ 😚
