Tino's thread

It's been a hectic week here - and not a sign of Tino. Not a peep. I check the nightcam footage most days and he's doing his own thing at night as before. Anyway it's given him about a week to settle again after his escapade. I'll have to start doing some more bathtub time.
I'm making my way through Tino's Thread. It's really interesting. When you say you haven't seen him for a week and time for some more bathtub time, do you mean you have to dig around in the bedding to find him and get him out?

That's quite some time ago now! I can't remember what stage that was, but if it was after his escape he was still a baby. He was initially in a slightly smaller 80 x 50 cage with 6" of bedding as he arrived under age and I wasn't expecting that. I didn't need to dig him out. I would lift him out sometimes but mostly he would walk into a tube. And the bathtub time was when he became hand tame. I then upgraded him to a 120cm x 60cm cage with 10" of bedding and I think that scared him. He disappeared for weeks! He was always a bit different as he didn't have the usual socialisation with his siblings for long enough before he came to me.

You see my problem is pretty much like you said, when I'm there he hardly comes out. I'm really against having to dig for him, but I can't see any other way. He won't come out for a treat. I'm really up against it. I'm really torn between wanting to get him more sociable or leaving him to it. He wont come out voluntarily...

I have tried to get him into a large jar with some banana inside but that didn't work. A jar would make it so much easier for me only having one opening.

I can see you certainly had your challenges with Tino.

I have bought a camera now - a Eufy - I need to set it up. I need to get an extension lead and a new wall socket, both of which have been ordered. They should arrive for the weekend.

I suppose leaving Kage how he is for another few days won't make any difference - will it? Then once the camera is set up, hopefully I can monitor his movements and times. Whether that will help I don't have a clue, but at least, if all goes well with the set up - and I'm not overly confident - at least I'll be able to see him.

By the way, I'm enjoying reading through Tino's Thread and watching the videos. It gives me something to aim for.

I'm sure it won't do any harm leaving him a few days. It might help to adjust the odd thing when doing a spot clean. Have to go now - I'll have a think. Or you could maybe feel around in the bedding until you find him and get him into the glass jar. The difficulty there might be it might make him hide even more.

Just edited my post above.

Bit of a late night here - Tino had a cage clean (not all of it) and it took longer than I thought! So he had to go in the playpen where I could keep an eye on him. He was quite happy rummaging around in there while I was out of sight, but now and then I'd go over and check on him and have a sit down for a few minutes after grappling with his house a few times (had to take it out and try and get the legs back on) and if he saw me he immediately started wanting to come out of the playpen! Then when I went back to the cage again (or he couldn't see me) he'd happily rummage again. By the time I had finished the cage and had a sit down, he was having a good go at trying to find a way out on his own. Climbed on his pumpkin hide and was looking at the top of the playpen (but it kept toppling over) then climbed up the flying saucer to the top and was looking at the top of the playpen. I think he realised he couldn't jump that far. He's quite cute rummaging in his upside down carrot cottage :-) And his little white paws as he runs along the end of the playpen later.

Anyway it was just playpen time tonight as I was too tired to let him free roam after that, but he had lots of treats to forage for in his cage :-)

Here he is towards the end wondering about using the flying saucer as a springboard

Lovely boy! Somewhat indignant about not being allowed out to free roam ❤

Yes he was definitely saying let me out! But only if he actually saw me nearby. When he couldn't see me he was happily foraging in his forage box or in his carrot cottage (like at the end of the video). The trouble is every time I went to video him doing something, he saw me!

Lovely video 😍

Aw, Tino just wants more of everything. He looks like he's having a great time  Any chance you will turn that tiny box into a forage board? You could cut a few holes in the top, and it might work for a Syrian

He has the little forage box as well but that other thing is a carrot cottage with hay stuck on it - it’s just upside down. It’s a little house with dried carrot on top and they both love nibbling the carrot on top 😊 A forage board sounds nice too - I know you are good at making those 😊

Tino loves his free roaming - he does lots of rummaging in things and running around happily and seems really enthused. The other night he found something - a coat that had been unceremoniously thrown on the floor! Not where it should have been. He seemed to love and be fascinated by the coat. Shortly after videoing him he then gave me a fright. Behind the coat was the sliding door (which was open and he promptly disappeared under it - eeek! And then I realised that because the door was open there was just wall on the other side of it so he couldn't get anywhere and he backed out again. The opening for the doorway is already blocked off with a board.

Anyway he really loved rummaging in that coat! He kept going back to it. It reminded me a bit of Raffy and Newt who used to rummage on a blanket on the floor near the door as well.

So cute! I'm glad Tino couldn't escape, it must have been rather scary for a moment. Nice bit of enrichment, playing in the coat 😍

Seems like you will have to put that coat on top of any clothes pile you make for Tino! Henry absolutely loved them, let him fulfill his love of climbing and there was always a soft landing everywhere.
