Jas, the hamster formally known as Jasper

The other thing about the getzoo sand bath I forgot to mention is that there really isn’t a lot of room under the top part once you put sand in there unless it’s very shallow, I glued a row of dowel pins around the back of mine then glued the top onto that so it’s about the right height for a hamster to dig or roll underneath, if you don’t want to hack it a bit it may not be the best choice.
Thank you, appreciate your help

Hi everyone, sorry it's been a while. Jas update, so since my OH has come back, her moods have changed again🙂. She comes out earlier again, still doesn't want the long times out to play, but does stay out longer. I still haven't decided on the sandbath, I'm looking at a bucatstate one now, but just need to work out how to add the dowels? She's still really happy sitting for long strokes and likes to interact.

Aww, she is gorgeous! 😍 How about a small cat litter tray? You can get one for about £5. Then you could pop a hide in it for a safe place.

It is wonderful Jas will sit for strokes.😍

Wouldn't it still need to be supported, once the sand is in wouldn't it be quite heavy? She is a burrower.

Lovely to see Jas & that’s a beautiful photo of her 😍
I’m not familiar with the bucatstate sand bath, is it wood or have a wood base? If it is then adding dowels would be simple enough or you could go with a platform & put dowels on that.
It does depend where in the cage you want to put it, the slope on the base can make things a bit tricky if it’s close t the edge, I don’t put my dowels right on the corners but move them further in if one or two sides are going to be up against the curve & slope of the base so they sit flat on the floor.
I just use Ponal glue to stick mine, I don’t bother with screws.

The bucatstate sandbath is acrylic, with a wooden platform, sorry, I can't seem to copy the link.
I think I'm going to get the Happy Henry one, it comes with everything you need. I'm not planning on putting it against an edge, so hoping the dowels will be fine. That's what I did for the MCH, just moved it out a bit.
Thank for all the advice

Just to let you know Hank if you wanted a custom design, Matt at Happy Henry will build exactly what you want for a very reasonable price. He does a 3d design first so you can see exactly what it will look like beforehand.

That sounds good! Thanks MacKyen - that is useful to know (for me too). Especially if he would put legs in different places so it could fit in a curved base! But then a sand bath maybe doesn't need to be right up at the edges.

So, who doesn't love a little bit of unplanned free roam (when she is back safely in her cage and unhurt, and my heart rate is back to normal!)
My OH let her out for a little wander, she does do this, only for a little while, as she doesn't like being picked up and the taxi is always on hand, however today, she wanted to set her own boundaries. I was downstairs, cleaning her wheel, and there was a shout, need help. She had got away and was under the bed. Grabbed some treats to coax her out, but she just came out at the bottom, wondering what all the fuss was about, she was having a lovely time. She wandered round the other side, both of us managed to scoop her up, but not quick enough to get into the taxi, she did not want the taxi, she very much liked the freedom. Finally managed to get her in the taxi, but I think she enjoyed her free roam🙂
I think playpen time tomorrow, is going to be harder, she has now tasted freedom😂

I was only worried, as it wasn't the hamster proof room, although Jas has other ideas on what is hamster proof. She was very good though, didn't chew anything, just couldn't believe how much space there was!

Aw she did sound like she enjoyed her taste of freedom. I think you're right, she is wanting to branch out a bit! Do you think you'll try her with some free roaming then? :-) I am lucky that Raffy will always walk into a tube if it's offered!

She doesn't like to be picked up. She will climb over your hand and if she needs help, she will climb into your hand, so you can move her, but doesn't like it, if you try to pick her up, so I worry about free roaming. She has her room, where her playpen is, and she does come outside of the playpen sometimes, maybe we will try that more.

Understood. Most Syrians will walk into a tube if there's a bit of cucumber in it :-) While they're out free roaming - if you need to catch them. If she was in a hamsterproof area then the main issue, if you couldn't catch her, would be how long you wait up perhaps?! I have felt stressed by that before, wanting to go to bed and trying to find the hamster! Who I know is somewhere in the room!
