Preparing for a hamster

Those look great, I didn’t realise that viovet did things like that but then I haven’t looked for a very long time!
I have a few of those flat rectangular type tubes & they’re really popular with the hams.

I thought I would update this thread because we are no longer getting an extra cage. When we lost Orko, my partner changed his mind and now wants us to adopt one hamster and focus on them. He also pointed out that we would struggle with space and we really do not have the room for an extra cage.

I will now continue this thread with updates about preparing for a hamster who will move in to Orko's cage.

The cage has been disinfected with F10 and it perfectly fine to be reused.

I have almost everything I need but of course, I needed bedding. Yesterday, my order of Fitch First arrived. I now have bedding.

A bit of annoying news, the multichamber dig box I painted green was ruined. I should have put it together before painting it because it was impossible to get it back together even using sand paper and a hammer! I painted it with 8 coats because it took that much to get an even coverage and it was a mess. A lesson learned for me anyway.

I have ordered a different type of substrate box and a sand bath from Happy Henry Homes. I want this set up to be different to my last one to have a fresh start so to speak. I will arrange things differently. I am not waiting to receive my order but there is no rush.

I'm looking forward to see your set up and meet the lucky hamster who is going to live with you.
As you say, no rush. Someone will come along.

I’m looking forward to seeing your new set up when you’re ready too.
I think it’s a good idea to change things around & have a fresh start.
Shame about the multichamber dig box, I learnt the hard way to always paint things put together too!

It's a good idea to have a different set up. It will be a lucky hamster :)

No doubt at all that the next hamster to come home with you and your partner will be a lucky one with all that love and care waiting plus a very thoughtfully put together cage.

I have had Aspen in the freezer for one week and just took it out. This will be put in a dig box so the hamster can enjoy digging in it, if they wish to.

I got two cute hyacinth tunnels today. I popped them in the oven to kill any bugs.

It looks like it’s all coming together nicely :)

I bought dandelion roots from Small Sprouts. They have been in the freezer for one week.

I bought a wooden rainbow and painted it using paint pens. When the hamster arrives and we name them I will write their name on a cloud.

I wanted to colour the rainbow to look like the rainbow in Rainbow Brite but when I started I noticed the rainbow colours change in every picture! That is why the colours may look an odd choice. 🙂

the rainbow looks lovely & it’s a great idea to put the hams name on there too.
I’ve done one of those before & they are quite fiddly to get neat & getting just the right colours isn’t easy either but you did a great job on that.

I’m sure the dandelion roots will be enjoyed too.

That's a beautiful wood rainbow. I love the idea of having the hamster name on it. The colours look great to me. I have some dandelion roots too and hamsters do enjoy them. I would suggest maybe not using them at first until the hamster is a few months old maybe. They are diruretic. It hasn't done any harm with any of mine but I think it's an idea to be cautious with them at first until they are fully grown. That is just my personal thought though.

I did not realise that. Orko always had some in his cage. Oops.

You've done a great job with the rainbow 🌈 💕
I know for sure with my shaky hands it wouldn't look like that 🤣

Aw, it was very hard to colour in and my eyes were seeing stars after!

I wouldn’t worry about the dandelion root too much, all herbs have some sort of medicinal effect but I’ve never had a hamster chew too much of it & have left it in the cage without any issues.

That's a beautiful and very neatly painted rainbow bridge Orko would approve of.
