Shes doing well! I've actually been looking into a cage upgrade for her to see if it helps make her feel more secure, however I need the piggies to stop having crisis after crisis first. I've spent about £1300 at the vet this month so it's had to be put on the back burner for a little while.
After Ferns respiratory issue, Pumpkin got a dental spur which required dental surgery. Then poor Finley developed sudden bloat, he unfortunately passed away after a last ditch surgery to remove gas from his stomach to reduce his pain as the strong pain meds weren't touching it. The cat also needed bloodwork doing, which luckily came back all clear but at 11.5 years we wanted to check his kidneys and thyroid.
I caught Saffy briefly on my way out to a race early one morning last week and she's looking well.
Looks like little madam is going to be taking a visit to the vet when I can get her booked in, which is going to be fun.. I cant handle her to flip her over although I might try again, nor can I get a good look in a clear container because she just balls up so I can't see!
It's looking like she's losing hair on her belly, or is greasy/damp. Not entirely sure what could be wrong, shes only just coming up to a year so I'm hoping it's nothing bad, and that she will allow the vet to have a look, although I have a feeling she may need a bit of gas to be checked over. She's very assertive about her feelings around being handled!
Of course she will sit still for a nice picture, but if I try to photograph or video her belly she just won't sit still long enough to get a clear shot.
Sorry to hear you’re concerned about her, it isn’t always easy to get a good look underneath, they can be very wriggly too. Hope it’s nothing too serious & that it all goes well at the vet.
Thankyou! Fingers crossed, it wouldn't be so bad if she wasn't a screamer..it makes me feel so awful trying to hold her, even when it's for her own good.
She is very beautiful It sounds like it might be to do with her scent gland. I wonder if something is making her over produce - or possibly an infected scent gland - but you might smell that.
I hope the vet gets to the bottom of it and all is ok.
Thankyou! Scent gland was my guess as her fur everywhere else is lovely, I'm just hoping it's not a tumour, I've had enough of animals getting cancer for one lifetime! Poor thing, shes never going to forgive me, I'll have to get her some nice treats as an apology
They do usually get over vet visits pretty quick.
It does sound more like a scent gland problem than a tumour if her fur is damp, I think if it was a tumour there would probably be more signs of a growth of some sort, scent gland problems are very common & usually easily treated so try not to worry too much.
That's reassuring, thankyou! The only scent gland issue I've ever dealt with was in a gerbil and that was a tumour so it kind of worried me, but an infection or something would make a lot of sense.
I’ve had hamsters with scent gland tumours before and they tend to be obvious - with a lump. So it doesn’t sound like that. The scent gland can get clogged up though and get messy or infected.
So it's currently not easy to get an appointment with my vet, he sold the practice but has stayed on for 3 days a week.. and of course everyone wants appointments with him, I did manage to get Saffron squeezed in on the 24th though, which isn't too bad co sidering I booked an appointment a week ago for one of the piggies and it isnt until the 27th!
