Socks: Mouseworks Dynamic Cardboard Redesign and Basic Tunneling

He sounds very interactive and to be having great fun :-)

Thanks, yes, he has become more confident since starting to roam in the room. Hamster proofing the room and keeping an eye on him all the time mean that it requires effort from me, but our communication is interesting. I'm trying to learn hamster.

Blossom is prone to engage in a little bar biting when she is in heat…it’s the only time she tries it…and she knows to stop if I tell her off for it lol. I have put things to chew between the bars in the spots where she is most likely to chew, and she’s quite happy to chew on those…she has plenty of different textures to chew round her cage too…her favourites are a bit of egg box, dried banana leaves and apple sticks.

That's interesting, thank you. What do you use between the bars? Socks likes to take a piece of dandelion root into his nest to chew on, but the cardboard and carrot cottages don't get chewed anymore. He used to shred them to bits at one stage. His chewing seems to be him trying to escape or burrow through the carpet. He liked the carry mat though. I will try some banana leaves, he might like getting his teeth into those.

This exploration basket from PAH was quite a good buy…only £5…I have put the basket in B’s cage as a hide, and it comes with a few different textures to try out. The vine carrot and wooden butterfly are both from PAH too…I tied the carrot to the bars and just slid the butterfly in between the bars. I also fold bits of egg box round the bars.

If you learn hamster, perhaps you could write a guide on here 🤣. It could be very useful.

Weaving strips on cardboard through the bars helps - eg a cut up cereal box.

I think it is a very difficult language. A lot is in ultrasound (They're talking about us, I wonder what they are saying!) Yes, I'd forgotten all the cardboard strips I had up before we got the Plaza 120. It's certainly a simple and effective form of anti bar biting.

These are super! What great ideas! Blossom likes pretty things, and looks beautiful in her puctures. I think Socks would like them too. I put up pieces of cardboard and he chomped them a bit and seemed more satisfied afterwards. He had a short out of cage session last night and then took a nap under a chair. When I offered him his tube he walked in very happily, but later on he was meerkatting. He had a long run on his new wheel, so he is still enjoying it very much.

I got the exploration basket for Socks as well as the butterfly and a rainbow wooden chew and the carrot for his front bars. He was quite wuiet last night, but this morning he came out and had a good drunk and went through his food bowl, going to bed with a pouch full of food. His scent glands are hairless now, looking at them in daylight, I can see bare skin on them, but it doesn't look inflamed or infected and I haven't seen or heard him scratching.

It's normal for the scent glands to look hairless :-) So nothing to worry about there. They don't really get infected on Syrians either. It sounds like Socks was having a day off :-) I'm sure he'll love the exploration basket.

Thanks Maz, that's great to hear! Socks is a little self conscious about his receding hairline! He was out very briefly last night at 11pm. I had to out the covet on the duvet and keep an eye on him at the same time, which took about 40 minutes😄 A couple of times he came up go the duvet to inspect it, my daring little hammy, and I had to make sure I knew where he was around my feet! He went into his tube like a trouper though and was quite restful last night. I am spot cleaning his house every day now as he uses his ensuite. I think I need to paint it with plastikote to seal it. He seems OK with the bit of cleaning. His main focus is getting out to free roam, which he relishes. It is quite magical meeting him without bars in between and he has become a lot more confident but still doesn't like being picked up though.

Lovely! I hope Socks enjoys his new goodies!

Yes, the banana leaves are really nice. Socks is out in the room at the moment having a free roam. He's a bit timid but adventurous as well.
