Charlie Boy

He is a lucky boy! I'm interested - what does he do with it? Does he nibble what he wants and leave the rest, or does he pouch the lot? Our first Syrian (also a Charlie) was very helpful like that - he would nibble what he wanted and leave the rest. Our second one would just pouch the meat and then I worried it may be rotting in the cage somewhere! So I didn't give it to him any more lol! Or if I did - only out of the cage - then if he pouched it I waited till he'd emptied his pouches before putting him back in the cage.

Charlie normally has a dig through and often takes the meat nibbles a goodly amount then pouches the lot and scoots off for some private eating.

Just some more shots of Charlie

1, Burrowing Charlie popping up for air, or to see if there is a treat in the offing....

 Wally is so silent that sometimes when I leave a treat like that by the entrance to his hideaway, if I'm not keeping a sharp eye, the food will be there one second and gone the next! Stealthy hamsters!

Charlie Update 15/03/23
So Charlie's behavior continues to baffle me, he is becoming a sedentary hamster he spends at least 90% of his time in his nest house, he seems to rarely use his wheel any more I've moved a few things around in his cage to hopefully stimulate him but he seems to ignore that.
One crazy thing he does is he gets into his cube ( another fave place of his) and has a vigorous cleaning session, when you watch him it looks like he is a washing machine as he keeps going round and around, I'll try to get a video of his madness and post a suitable link.

Some hams do tend to be a lot less active than others but I wonder if the collder weather might have anything to do with it? Some get up later as the eveniings get lighter too altough it might still be a bit early for that to make much difference.
I would have thought that moving things around in the cage might make him a bit more reclusive, they’re usually happier if we leave things alone unless something really isn’t working.

All I moved was the height of his upper walkway corner section to make it easier to access his house instead of removing the top of the cage. He is also putting on weight quite quickly too.

I doubt that would have bothered him then.
He is still young & growing so I wouldn’t worry about the weight just yet.

The last photo of Charlie is gorgeous! Not sure how I missed it before - he looks happy :-) He has some really interesting colours in that light as well - looks like grey flecks.

I think it's probably the cold weather and maybe partly his personality as well - him staying in his house a lot. Raffy is a very gregarious hamster but even he doesn't come out till about 11pm since winter. It was later than that a couple of weeks ago. When I first got him he'd be out on his wheel about 8 or 9pm every night and wanting to come out. It got later and later from autumn onwards.

When we had the freezing weather and snow recently he was back to not coming out till gone midnight. Room temperature is part of it too I think. I've tended to find they come out more when the room is nice and warm or in warmer weather and light nights.

He probably uses his wheel at night when all the lights are out :-)

Our first hamster, it was just his personality - he was definitely a home bod. And didn't want to come out of his cage at all. Or his house until after dark. I started feeding at around 7pm and putting his veg on the far side of the cage in a separate dish, so he actually had to walk across the cage to get it and come out a bit. He soon got in the habit of that and it was a good time to tempt him into a tube with a smelly treat in, for out of cage time.

He still didn't want to come out and developed this trick of leaving a leg outside the tube, reaching in and grabbing the treat and backing out quickly. I couldn't get my hand over the tube to lift it out as his leg was sticking out in the way! Clever little things haha. But once he was out he enjoyed it.

I think it’s still early days for Charlie and he‘s likely still settling in. Our male Syrian sometimes pops out in the day for a drink and then heads back to his nest. Other days we don’t see him at all until 9pm ish. As long as when he’s out he looks healthy and is interested in the new food you’ve left, I’d just sit and chat to him. He’s no doubt hamstering around in the night when no one’s about.

Would be great to see a video of Charlie doing his washing machine moves if you can catch them. Hams likes to roll round and round in tubes, I’ve just never been able to get a video of it.
