Second chance hamsters

I'm starting to wonder if Toby's behaviour is within the normal range.
He sleeps all day and gets up around 20.00 to run around like this. He also likes to run through the tube at speed. Now and again he crashes out on the wheel for a nap or stops to eat a few seeds but mostly he races around like that.
He has been out a couple of times but mainly hangs around me and shows no interest in freeroaming.
I know that he had nothing to do, didn't get any attention and stayed in his tube in his original home but shouldn't he have calmed down a bit by now?

He certainly looks very active! Is it since you added the extra level? Maybe he's just adjusting to the new things and isn't bored yet :)

He could be just making up for lost time and just really enjoying himself. Maybe once he realises this is for real and his life is going to be better now he'll calm down. A bit like my Albert realising he didn't have to share his cage anymore and wasn't going to be bullied anymore.

No, he was like that before. The extra level just gave him another place to go.
He's up for adoption but i've not had any decent enquiries yet. He'd love the space of a detolf with a wheel at each end and plenty of things to run through inbetween. Dream on, Beryl.....

I can pick Davy up off the floor now. He's still a bit jumpy but not half as much as when he first came here. I can carry him while holding him against me stroking him and he seems to prefer that to the tube taxi he tries to get out of. I think that with time he'll be able to form quite a strong bond with his humans.

Lovely photos of Davy & he sounds as though he’s settled in so well with you.

Not sure about Toby to be honest, he is running around super fast but to keep doing that doesn’t really seem like normal behaviour for a Russian that’s well settled in, maybe he just needs more time to get used to things, it’s hard to say really when you don’t actually see the hamster.

Snowy used to alternate between running on her wheel and dashing around her enclosure for hours at a time at night. I think some hamsters just prefer to burn off their energy by running around their enclosure rather than using their wheel. My guess would just be that he's just a high energy guy!

It’s hard to tell from just the one video but it seems a bit strange that he does just seem to be running around & not really stopping anywhere to do anything or investigate anything, the way he behaves in the cage & out with you makes me wonder if maybe he’s still uncomfortable with open space. Would it be possible to put more hides or tunnels (not clear ones) just to see if he settles down a bit more?

I'll take Toby out tonight to assess his behaviour outside his cage

I set up his foster cage tailored towards what i thought were his needs but i have been thinking along the same lines as you this morning.
I'm not even sure now that the loft was a good idea or the tube downstairs.
He was the same when he was in the bin cage though.

I remember him rushing about a lot in the bin cage, but thought that was just excitement at his new environment. He could just be reacting to change. But yes maybe if it went back to how it was before, he might behave as he did before perhaps.

How long was he in the bin cage? I can’t even really remember how long you’ve had him now, lose track of time easily!
That kind of behaviour would have been understandable when you first got him & he was in there.
It does seem to take the odd one much longer to settle too.
