Socks: Mom woke me up this morning for a photoshoot, not of me, but of my paw print! She's delighted because I'm in today's page of the advent calendar (Hello Blossom )
Mom: I bought some desert substrate from Rodipet for Socks. It's lovely red clay and sand, but Socks didn't dig in it. In fact, he started eating bits of it! But that's no problem, I'll use it for my plants. I did get a picture of his paw print in the clay. Hopefully thanks to Rodipet and hamster conservation efforts there are still hamsters' prints in the sandy soils of their native home.

Mom: I took out the soiled bedding and Socks came out of his primary nest (nest/larder) to say hello. Hoping to get a nice picture of a sleepy Sock, I turned around to get the phone, and when I had turned back, phone at the ready, Socks had gone back under the bedding.
Socks: Mom took a picture of the bed in my other nest. The camera sometimes brings on aerial predator angst
Mom: Well, it is Sunday. The best thing to do on a Sunday morning is to grab a piece of walnut / cup of tea and go back to bed

Socks: Mom socked up on Fitch First just in time for the cold snap. I love the tunnels I have created.
Mom: I'm lucky if I see Socks at the moment. Finding his loo area and cleaning it is going to be a challenge for both of us. But he is happy creating tunnels. I can hear him rustling under the substrate.

I find it goes a long way as well For an initial cage set up though, in a 120cm cage, it took the whole bag! After that, a bag lasts for ages.

I usually get it direct from Fitch . It’s odd they called it tea bag bedding on eBay because Fitch themselves say it’s recycled food grade paper. Which I guess could include tea bags but it doesn’t quite seem like that kind of paper.

It’s gone down to £31.99 recently but they do charge postage extra now. It used to be free shipping. It’s good stuff though IMO

You have to be a bit careful when ordering as well as there are different types - some are sort of long stringy bits of pause rather than the small pieces which are more like Kaytee C&C.

Yes, I think I got the long stringy bits Do you buy direct from Fitch? More like Kaytee C&C would be better.

I don’t know why they started selling the one that’s stringy bits - I’m guessing it’s meant for horses. It’s still ok though.

I had to clean Socks' loo area last night, and found him.
Socks: Imagine you are trying to sleep and Mom bustles in to clean
Mom: So I weighed Socks and put him in his playpen.
Socks: Mom tried to make sense of my tunnels She found my hoard, but left it alone which is good as I've only just started it after the last nest jumbling. I had a nice sand bath.
Mom: Socks had a nice sand bath. I need to apply a dose of Ivermectine as his fur is thin in places.
Socks: I had a good workout on my wheel last night.
Mom: Socks took his veggies early this morning. I think the cleaning changed his routine.

Aw he looks curious there and very sweet How old is he now? I was just thinking fur thinning can be an age thing as well but maybe he's not that old.

Thank you! I brought Socks home from P@H on 1st December 2023 and they estimated he was about four or five months. So he could be about a year and a half. He is a sweet little fellow! He is about middle aged, but still very active.
